DJ v. DJ/MC combo

DJ v. DJ/MC combo

for a 'smallish' wedding of about 140. I wouldn't want an over the top mc anyway, just someone to make the announcements and let the dj know how the music is going (no overt mixing with the crowd, telling people to 'put your hands up' or anything remotely like that)

please post the pros/cons and your experiences with both as a bride and/or as a guest at a wedding with and without and mc and whether you found anything 'lacking' in the weddings without one.

thanks a bunch.

I was just at a wedding this past weekend w/ about that amount, and they only had the DJ. It was perfect. He announced the bride and groom, the parent dances, and that's it. He played music continually and didn't try and entertain the crowd, we entertained ourselves. It was great.

Went to a wedding without an MC last summer and it was a very different feel than a wedding with an MC/DJ combo. I think the couple was going for a more relaxed feel which is what they got. IMO the wedding was not as fun as weddings with an MC/DJ combo. This wedding had all of the same friends as previous weddings so I know it wasn't the crowd. we are personally looking to party our arses off at a wedding and I think the DJ/Mc combo adds to the party atmosphere. Just my opinion. we are the crazy type so you might not want to go by my opinion.

they had about 150 at their wedding.

we had about 100 people at our wedding and only had DJ... honestly, if your friends and family come ready to party they will party believe me we had so much fun and I dont think there was a need for MC...

I dont know but for some reason I find MCs annoying...I would prefer to have only the DJ make all the major announcements and play the music all night long...I know the older crowd at my wedding is going to get a kick out of us youngsters partying...its actually your guests that make the party jumping.

There are soooooo many MC's that are low key and will only do what you want. We spoke with our MC and said we wanted NO CHEESE at all because so far everything about the wedding is very elegant and romantic. I want a party....but with class. I think without an MC, people tend to dance less but that is JMO

I agree. I am only using a DJ. I do not want the 'cheese' factor at my wedding either

IMO, having a DJ/MC does NOT make a wedding 'cheesy'.

I agree with the fact that having an MC does not make it cheesy. there is nothing cheesy about my wedding and to be honest, one of my favorite vendors has been my DJ! I just want to have a big 'ole party!

I agree about the whole cheese factor- MC does not equal cheese so lets stay away from that word....anyway, one persons 'cheese' is anothers rip roaring good time.

the thing is this...we are a party family...we can party in a elevator if a good song comes on, so I really just need the mc to make the major announcments and THAT'S it, so it seems kind of a waste of $500 if I get an mc and don't use them to their full capability.

I am not so sure my family would even notice if we didn't have an mc- they'll be too busy dancing...the rest of them....the most energetic MC in the world couldn't get them up to dance, so it doesn't matter.

thanks ladies.

Jess, then I think you just made your decision! Good luck!

Re: DJ v. DJ/MC combo

IMO the MC is kind of important. The DJ has head phones on listening to two songs, one thats playing, and one that he's cuing up to play. He's also looking ahead to what he will play in the future, watching the time for key moments (cake cutting, dinner, etc)

IMO, the MC is really there for the guests to make requests, organize the BP for things, organize the bride & groom & parents for the first dances, etc. The MC is very important because it keeps it all flowing without interrupting the DJ spinning. I cant imagine the DJ doing it all.

JMO!

yeah, I was a little confused on this point too b/c it seems like some of the roles overlap, at least in turns of the running of the affair.

the maitre d will coordinate all of the important moments...but the mc will help out if he is there....but if not, the maitre d takes care of the timing of everything.

the only thing I think the mc does that the maitre d doesn't is getting involved with the guests by getting them to dance...the mc is their for them, the maitre d is there for you..

at least that's my take on it. take to you BM or maitre d to have his or her role clarified for you.

Re: DJ v. DJ/MC combo

I think it's a personal preference. We didn't want an MC - it just isn't our style. Our DJ made all the announcements and people were dancing all night. We had a smaller wedding (100 people) and did not have a lot of special stuff, though. The only announcing we had was the first dance, introducing the priest for the blessing before dinner, cake cutting and anniversary dance. He did a spectacular job, IMO and getting another person would have been a waste of money for us. The DJ did everything just as I pictured it to be and I was really happy with it.

If you have a huge guest list and a lot of stuff going on, special dances, announcements, etc. then maybe it would be worth it. I think people think if the don't have the MC, the party will seem kind of dead. I don't think that is the case and I think most DJs can handle the announcements. I think having an MC just brings a different kind of energy to the party and if that is your thing, then get one. If the MC style is not your thing, then you probably don't need to spend the $.

ETA: I think the Matre'D coordinates with whoever is doing the music for announcements and the special stuff, like the cake cutting and tosses. The staff at the hall have to have that stuff ready to go before the MC/DJ announces it, so they work together on that.

Re: DJ v. DJ/MC combo

We're having a smaller wedding (@ 125). I know exactly which guests will get up and dance, and which ones won't. Paying for an MC would not change that. I decided against it based on my knowledge of the crowd. If I thought an MC could get some of those wall flowers up off their butts, then I would have considered it, but with some people (like FH) there is nothing you can do to make them dance. I strongly suspect it will be me & my BP and FH's BP (without him because he hates to dance and is only doing first dance with me b/c I told him if he didn't I wouldn't marry him ), one of my brothers, my crazy aunt, and three other friends on the dance floor all night, and that is about it. I hope I'm wrong, but I know my side of the guest list.
