So, we got our final balance broken down into components. And it looks like they figured out the service charge amount first...and then added that to the food cost. THEN calculated tax based on food cost + service charge.
Is that normal?!!! That they are charging tax on the gratuity?!!

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
i actualyl just called about this at CLM today
they do tax on gratuity because it isnt actually a tip that the servers and all that will get that night..its their pay..so CLM gets taked and we do too
so its how many people x how much pp + gratuity + tax
thats how the banquet manager explained it to me..so it ***** but thats how it is

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
I don't know if that's 'normal'. They shouldn't and I'm pretty sure on my contract they do the tax before the gratuity. I can check, just need to dig out my contract.. gimme a sec.

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
i'm pretty sure this is the standard way to compute the balance, done by nearly all the rh's (maybe even all ?)

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
a lot of reception halls tax the gratituity since it is not actually a tip like prior poster said.

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
it clearly states on my contract that TAXES: 8.38% NEW YORK SALES TAX: WILL BE ADDED TO ALL CHARGES, EXCEPT GRATUITIES
I guess it depends on the hall. Can you FM a former WM bride?

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
From what my RH told me, when they call it a 'service charge' it gets taxed. My BM said 'the servers have to pay taxes on it, so do you.'

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
our RH is figuring on the total for our head count...then a 15% facility fee ...then taking sales tax on that figure to get to our final balance. we have no set gratuity...we can give extra or just pay the final balance they tell us.
i would assume most places would use the same equation replacing a facility fee with gratuity percentage of the total per head...then taking tax of that number for the final balance

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
I agree with you but its not a gratuity its a 'SERVICE FEE' if it says that its taxable. If it says gratuity then you can wiggle out of it possibly. CLM charges on the service fee. That is also why they ask for you to tip again because that is the tip, service fee is just salary of workers. Its so stupid.

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
nah you don' thav eto tip the butler service at the tables what you do is tip the matre'd and the bridal attendant.
The bartender at clm as a tip jar and the same thing goes for valet and coat checker.
The service fee that you pay tax on goes to the wait staff/cooks/etc. But its a fee not a gratuity in contatract terms therefore taxable.
But I have seen peoeple tip the wait staff if they do an AMAZING job but I can say I wont be doing this. Fh and I can barely cover the tips for the matre'd and bridal attendant IoI

Re: Help with my RH final balance please!
since they use the word 'Service Charge' and not gratuity....yes they are absolutely allowed to charge tax on it, and just about every hall does it.

Yeah - its normal.
Honestly Jen, if you work it out both ways its not that much of a difference....
