OMG, the day has come. My Mom and her sister both have thyroid problems. My Mom is hypo and her sister is hyper. All my life I've been underweight and I eat like a beast, my regular doctor has been monitoring my thyroid since I was 16 just waiting for the day that it showed I was hyper. About a year ago I came down with a weird skin condition commonly associated with thyroid disease, but my thyroid tests remained normal and my dermatologist has just kept repeating the tests every so often. Well, I just got the call....the last round came back showing hyperthyroidism. I knew all my life I would have it eventually, but man is it a shock when it finally happens.
So....I need to go to an endocrinologist. And I really need to get one in the Garden City area - that's where I work and I'm starting my first lawyer job on Monday so I really have to figure out how to do this at lunch time and not take off/leave early.
Can anyone recommend a GREAT endo in or near Garden City (maybe w/in like a 10 or 15 min drive - I am right on the Meadowbrook exit M2).
Thanks.

I am having the same isues right know. I had bloodwork done and I have an overactive thyroid and now I am on the borderline of diabetic with my blood sugar. My brother works for the state senate and knows of this endocrinologist that is supposedly world renowned. His name is Irwin Klein and he is in manhasset. His number is 516-562-4329. HTH I might be going in the next few days too!!

Funny you say that I just saw his name in a listing of endos! Maybe we'll see each other in the waiting room!!! Do you mind me asking - was it your T4 that came back elevated in your blood work? That's what mine was. This is so frustrating!

I am not sure what it was. They just called me today. They are trying to get me into my regular doctor first and then the endocrinologist b/c the weren't sure if they could add a blood test onto my lab blood work or if it was too late. I should be hearing from them tomorrow and then I will let you know. All I know is that my thyroid levels were so high they were almost undetectable. Not sure what exactly that means though. I will update you when I find out.

Wow - definitely let me know. I'm going to go the same route - go to my regular doc and then to an endo. I will also keep you posted.

I got a last minute appt at my general dr today.. They only knew that my TSH was high, but today they took tests for T3 , T4 and antibodies, and I am going for a thyroid scan today at 5. I have an appt with Dr. Klein tomorrow at 11. I will let you know how it goes.

Funny, I have the opposite going on. On mine they took the T3 and T4 but forgot to take the TSH. So I know I have a normal T3, high T4, and no clue yet on the TSH. Spoke to my regular doc on the phone and it sounds like we are going to re-run all of the above plus add the TSH in there and in the meantime I'm going to make an endo appt.

My dad sees a Dr out in Stony Brook right off 347...is that far? If not I'll get the info.
