10 Digit Dialing Required For Local Calling In New York
Over the next few days, up until February 1st, you will probably be alerted to announcements dealing with the subject of dialing 10 digits to complete
local calls in New York.
In New York City, where multiple area codes co-exist (212, 718, 917, 646, and 347), residents will be required to dial 10-digits to complete all
local calls within the same area code. The reason behind this is to satisfy the need for telephone numbers as demand continues to grow
Beginning February 1, 2003, New York City residents must dial 1 + the area code + the 7-digit number to complete all calls within area codes 212, 718, 917, 646, and 347. Calls dialed using only seven digits cannot be completed and will be directed to a recorded intercept announcement. Calls between different New York City area codes (212, 718, 917, 646 and 347) still require dialing 1 + the area code + the 7-digit phone number.
New York City calls dialed within the same area code or between area codes using 1 + the area code + the 7-digit phone number are still local calls.
Calling rates are not affected.
Dialing to reach 9-1-1 emergency services, and 4-1-1 to reach directory assistance will remain the same. Long distance and international calls
remains unchanged as well.
