1/20/03 QOTD - What was some the best advice you received about marriage?
On our honeymoon in Jamaica, we met a older couple. They were celebrating their 40 anniversary. They said to us: Instead of focusing on celebrating our anniversary, that we should focus on celebrating our honeymoon. They advised us to find the time and the money to take a vacation every year to celebrate our marriage. They said that one year, you may not be able to go abroad, but you can stay at a fancy hotel or inn for the weekend. My husband and I have vowed that we would take that advise.

Man we got so much advise but the only advise we use is ' keep people out of your business'
Other than that we have just been doing our own thing.

Yes I experienced that this weekend. I really need to go the extra mile and cook more. Starting this week I am working on that.

this is all good advice! Sadly, I just realized that no one really gave us any serious advice though......
I completely agree with remembering why you're fighting - I just did that to DH yesterday! After 5 mins I couldn't remember why I should be mad. So I stopped yelling

Yes Suzanne THAT we practice. No matter what we kiss and say I love you and then leave.
I would go ballistics if we left upset and our last words to each other were something mean.

Some of the advice that I remember:
(...from our priest, who preformed our ceremony) 1) Never go to bed angry with one another 2) Say 'I love you' as often as you like 3) Be each other's best friend
(...from one of the couples that hosted our Pre-Cana) 1) If you are going to have a huge argument, than STRIP - guaranteed the argument won't last long! 2) Learn how to fight fair and listen to the other's point of view 3) Cook and have dinner together every night (or as often as humanly possible)
(...from MOH and friends) 1) Always dance to your wedding song - no matter where you are - stop what you are doing to hold each other and DANCE! 2) Put your marriage before your children
(...from family members) 1) Always put your heart into what you say and do 2) Share your happiness as well as your sorrow 3) Don't keep secrets from each other (about serious things, the playful 'fibs' are okay) 4) Always have time for one another
I am sure there is a ton of other stuff...this is just what I remember off the top of my head.

My FI'S parents and parents said:
Everyone should give 60%!
Be all too quick to accept an apology.... Don't hold a grudge...
Say 'I will consider that' or 'fair point' or 'let's discuss this a little later' a lot even if you don't think so....
After every fight say the moral... 'Wow I just learned something new about you'...like it was a learning experience.
Give him 15 minutes alone when he comes home from work.... let him seek you out. Let him relax and stretch on his own....
One night a week, have a dinner where the table is set, nice dishes are used, candles are light, and homemade food appears and dishes magically disappear.... Gives off the June Cleaver warmth...
I don't know guys.... I'm still learning! I'm not into letting the male dominate so much but I am willing to dol the above for a happy household.

It was an old phrase that my mom told me. It means you shouldnt go to bed angry and if you do, dont leave the bed in the middle of the night.

Re: Dglsunshine...
See this is why we must be careful when taking advise. I tell my friends you need to know your man.
Give him 15 minutes alone when he comes home from work.... let him seek you out. Let him relax and stretch on his own....
If I do this hubby will come. 'What happen, where is my big greeting and hug and kiss? '
Me 'oh I am so sorry I just thought you might want to wind down after a day at work.'
Him 'No I rush home to see you and get my hug and kiss'
AAAWWW got to love him
This marriage thing I tell you we just learn everyday.

I was told lots of things - but a few that stick in my mind - from Uncle Jerry - married forever - Have a short term memory
From a mentor - sex and laughter - don't let either one go.
Keep your friends and social life of your very own.
Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...

Re: 1/20/03 QOTD - What was some the best advice you received about marriage?
That was a BIG one I forgot!!!!
Look physically good for one another.... Try to keep your looks up! A little unorthodox, but I feel like maybe my FI will appreciate the effort a little more... On friday night, we have date night and we get ready and look good for each other.... I will wear a short skirt instead of jeans, etc, put some nice make-up on! The goal of the night is to make him go wow!
