1/7/03 Question of the day. How do you divide the household chores w/DH?

Original post by RichsBride

We both work, in fact I have 2 jobs and we have 2 kids so there is a lot of cleaning to be done.
I'm just wondering how everyone gets the job done in their home.
Yesterdays subjuct about Dad's not being helpful enough made me think of it.

Rich cooks about 50% of the time
I cook about 30%
we eat out the other 20%

Nicole sets the table(when she's w/us)
I usually clean up after meals-the kids help sometimes

I do the laundry, my son does his own.

Rich & usually food shop together on the weekend
Rich cleans the fridge everyweek.

I clean the bathrooms-sometimes I ask the kids to clean theirs.

Rich mops the kitchen floor

I do all dusting & light daily maintaince stuff.

The kids are responsible for their own rooms.

We live in a townhouse so all of our outside work is done for us.

Brian is in charge of garbage.

That's all I can think of now. I'm really grateful that Rich helps as much as he does. I don't how how career Moms that don't have helpful hubbies do it!

i do most of the stuff b/c i'm home much earlier every night and i don't work weekends which he does...but somehow, he manages to help out a lot by doing all the things i hate....the dishes after dinner, vacuuming, fixing stuff around the house, taking out garbage, carrying the food shopping, putting away laundry, etc...

These kind of mops are great for high traffic areas. Its so simple and easy to use.
Its probably not really for deep cleanings, but for during the week to keep you sane, its great!!!!

I say I do about 85 % of the cooking. we have been eating most our meals at home because it realy gets expensive wehn we eat out...and then we share a main course.
As fro Laundry...Mitch is not allowed anywhere near the basement...if he does do laundry it is underware and towels...he doe snot read labels and just put everyhing in the wach together and then sticks it i he dryer with out even chaging the temp...Twice he has ruined very epensive pants because he just took them off the chiar andwached them..mind you I was not home...

But it does clean and vacumm and does the dishes about 60 % of the time...

Lisa, after I asked you I remembered on the parenting thread I posted the IVF link for you, sorry for asking again. I must keep up, I am so slow sometimes. I will let you know how my mop works. Well the reason I bought it was so there would be no need for heavy cleaning, clean as you go is my philosophy.

No problem Shamma! I don't post all that often even though I've been here for almost 3 years!!!
Good luck with the mop

Sham, great idea about the meats.

I also agree that men should be self-sufficient. Especially today. When we were growing up, most of our mother's were home ... but I refused to be married to or raise a son that expects me to wait on him. It's Not like it used to be ... I've been in some houses where the mother was like a servant. That would never be me! Luckily, Vinnie does not expect these things!

Since I'm home in the afternoon, I do most of the straightening up. He does the laundry @ the laundry mat, but anything delicate I take to my mom's. (I bought my house b/f we met & I still do not have a washer/dryer or a dishwasher!! )

He takes care of most of the outside, cooks often & does dishes as needed. Our problem spot is the bathroom. Sharing a bathroom aggravates me to no end! I told him that we needed an extra bath or we'd be divorced b/f the year was up! j/k! It would make life much easier though!

Re: 1/7/03 Question of the day. How do you divide the household chores w/DH?

I think the word 'divide' is a bit overstated in our case. Scott will help anytime I ask him to, but for some reason he cannot see a mess or that something needs to be cleaned on his very own. He vacumns every week without my asking. And he takes out the trash. He did the laundry once but put one of my suits in the washer and dryer so I sorta decided we would go broke if I let him do it again . So Scott will help if I say 'Can you please dust the bookcase and coffee table' then he will ask me (everytime) 'Where is the stuff I should use' as if I move our cleaning products from room to room each week but then he does it with no problem. So I asked him if I should buy one of those kid's chore things for the frig to help remind him of the things that need to be done daily/weekly. I mostly think it is that I feel a bathroom should be cleaned 2 a week, he lived on his own for many years and feels 2 a month is just fine by him. We have different definations of what the 'clean' means.

Re: 1/7/03 Question of the day. How do you divide the household chores w/DH?

I do almost all of the housework...not by choice - I just care more than he does

I cook dinner during the week and sometimes on Sundays. Saturday we usually eat out.
I clean the entire house -- DH just doesn't clean! I ask him to help, but he doesn't.
I do the laundry.

We do food shopping together.
We take out the garbage together.

He cooks breakfast on the weekends. He'll also clean the pots after we dinner, as far as the dishes go...we have a dishwasher.

I work from home so that's really why the burden is on me. As far as cleaning though -- I do this on the weekend so there's no excuse!!

Michelle, I feel you 100% on exactly what you just posted there. Sometimes it seem as if you don't point it out no one sees it are women the only one that sees the dust ball about to move us out or the ring forming around the tub, or the shower curtain liner that is starting to stand on its own

Since I have school a couple of nights a week ... He helps out with the cooking and cleaning ... but for the most part, I clean. He's very neat though ... so it makes my life easier. He helps with the laundry, we usually alternate weekends. He takes care of the cat's mess too!
He takes care of the outside chores. Plus he takes care of all broken things and the car. I never have to ask him to clean my car -- he washes/waxes/and removes the snow without a reminder.
He was out on his own for 10 years before me ... so he's definitely self-sufficient!

Re: 1/7/03 Question of the day. How do you divide the household chores w/DH?

we both pretty much do everything. I usually cook more often since I would get home earlier, but that means he washes the dishes and cleans the kitchen up. I do more of the food shopping or we do it together (he rarely does major food shopping on his own)

We do house cleaning on the weekends together (not every weekend, just when needed). He's great at laundry and has learned which of my sweaters can go in the dryer (or more importatnly which can't).

Now that I'm out of work and he's been working crazy hours, I've been trying to take on more of the household responsibilities since I've got the time.

I do most of the cleaning, but Joe helps out a lot. He does the mopping because he can't stand the way I mop -- I do it 'wrong'!! Actually, I'll admit it, I'm a spaz w/a broom and mop because I had rugs when I lived at home and the bathroom & kitchen were so small, there was hardly a floor to sweep/mop. So he can knock himself out with that!

I do all the laundry, changing the sheets, making the bed, cleaning the bathroom (he does the floor and the ceiling since it's wall to wall tile), etc. He helps me cook (sometimes it's a help and other times it's more like a bother ), clean off the table and he'll do the windows. I'm lucky because a lot of my friends have to do every single thing and are constantly *****ing and moaning. I should shut up, but sometimes I wish he wouldn't help as much -- I appreciate it, but sometimes I can do it better and faster myself!

Re: 1/7/03 Question of the day. How do you divide the household chores w/DH?

I'm really lucky in this dept - Don does a lot of the housework and laundry.

He dusts and vacuums the LR, DR & BR. I usually clean the bathroom but he lost a bet and had to clean it last night

We both do the kitchen - I do a lot of the regular day to day stuff (dishes/counters/sweep) and clean the refrigerator, but he does the outside of the cabinets.

We both do laundry, but he will often start it so that by the time I get home from work it's ready to be folded and put away.

Mostly we both do big grocery shopping together but he will pick up things in between the big trips.

I do most of the cooking but there are a few things he prepares better that he now has to cook.

He gets home much earlier then I do and if he had to wait for me to do it we would end losing a whole weekend day doing chores and neither of like that - especially me since I get off real easy in the housework dept.

I do most of the cooking, general cleaning, and laundry; however, that is because I am home.

He does the bathroom and the garbage. He vaccums and wash dishes occasionally.
