So I am having a problem... I really want to change my last name, but professionally (I am an actress) I am going to keep my maiden name because that is how everyone knows me and it is just much easier to keep my maiden name for acting. So... how do I go about this? I really don't want to hyphenate it on my license- I just want to have his last name for 'life' and my last name for acting. Do I have to hyphenate my last name at my bank so I can cash checks and everything? I'm so confused already! I'm not even sure what to use his name for and what to use my name for! Oyyyy please help!!

Re: 2 last names??
Im not sure if you can do this-BUT can you change you name legally, etc. but keep your name as your maiden for all your on screen stuff? Does that make sense? Will they let you keep your maiden name as like a 'nickname' even tho you have changed it? For example...credits, head shots you are Courtney Smith, but your paycheck, etc. are Courtney John???
Im not even sure if this made any sense
OK, to cash checks the checks must be written to the name on your DL, to deposit checks they dont necessarily have to be that name-I deposit checks for Peggie Last name all the time and that is not my full real name....never had a problem.

Re: 2 last names??
Court as long as the bank or CC don't know your new last name than you can keep it as is.
I have not changed anything even though sometimes I have to sign with My full name than First Initial of my Last than his full last name.
If a check in made into your married name banks don't care if you do it for deposit only -they care only if you have to cash the check.
Hope that makes sense.

Re: 2 last names??
hmmm I wonder if... I change to his last name on my drivers license, credit cards, social security, and passport... and then keep my maiden name just for acting.... maybe I'll ask my bank what I should do- because tons of people have 'stage names' and sometimes their last name has nothing to do with their given name OR married name... and somehow THEY cash their checks... ugh what a pain! haha

Re: 2 last names??
Hey fellow actor! I would just use your maiden name professionally and change it everywhere else. This will make life a lot easier especially if you belong to one of the unions. As for the bank I don't think it will be a problem. A bunch of people at our wedding signed there checks 'Roy and Diane G...' and I wasn't ever going to be taking DH's name and had no problem cashing the checks. Hope that made sense

Re: 2 last names??
When I went to SSA, I had my name changed so I now have 2 middle names - my middle name, and my maiden name. My DL was change to Tina Marriedname, but for work, I go by Tina Maiden Married. My broker licenses all have that name, and I sign off on paperwork like that, and it hasn't been a problem.
Also, in my job, I've reviewed documents for some pretty big name celebs (sorry I can't say who), and in reviewing their trusts, foundations, etc, you see that a lot of women sign their legal docs w/ their married name, but their screen name is their maiden name, so I'm sure for your industry it wouldn't be a problem to have your screen name remain your maiden name.

Oooh this is great to know - so at SS you were able to just make your maiden name a 2nd middle name without any problems? I want to change my name to
first: Yesenia middle: Middlename Maiden last: Marriedlast
and I didn't think it would be possible without going through a 'legal name change' with the courts.
