I border with impatients cause they are very hardy and if you use miracle grow(i have the one that attaches to the hose) they get REALLY bushy..
I border with this, then i have a HYDRANGEA plant also.. this year im looking for more and im not sure yet, im the type of person that just goes to the nursery and figures it out from there..

Re: 4/21/03 QOTD: What do you plant in your front/back yard?
This is my plan so far:
I started a bunch of seads for my pots already. The rest of the stuff I'll buy in the next few weeks. I usually wait until Mothers day to start planting.
Front Garden - There are a few unidentified things coming up, and some basic LI greenery but I will be adding some Impatients
Front Porch- Pots of misc. annuals
Side garden - Roses Ill get a few from Odd Job and splurge on a few Jackson & Perkins
Deck - same as front Porch
Veg. Gardent - tomotaos, zuchini, peppers and herbs maybe some eggplant
I want to do a back garden in mostly annuals but we have to get the massive shed torn down first.

Suzanne - Im the same way...but 1/2 my stuff ends of dying a slow death! I dont know if its the soil in the front yard or my black thumb but its really annoying.
2 years ago, I finally got it looking good but I havent been able to recreate it.
I need low ground cover like plants that thrive in partial sun/shade.

Stef do you condition your soil and use a plant food? Your local garden store might be able to analyze your soil and give you a recomendation for some soil additives.

I use plant food, put in fresh soil every year and mulch...so i think im doing the best I can in terms of soil health.
I have dwarf cherry tree growing in my front yard that blooms so Im assuming the soil must be okay. Plus, 2 years ago I had petunias and impatients and mini roses growing up the ying yang but havent been able to replicate it. Maybe it was last years crazy weather?
I just think I have a black thumb :D
But Im going to try again this year :D

Re: 4/21/03 QOTD: What do you plant in your front/back yard?
I LOVE planting flowers. I usually plant impatients, begonias(around mailbox), pansies, we have black eye susans, they are pernnials, and those fluffy bushes.(never remember what they are called). We also have Montauk daiseys that come up every year too. Now I have my daffodils, and hyacinths, and waiting for my tulips.
This is the time of year I spend so much $$$ on flowers. I love it, and so worth it
Have fun!!!!

I'm sure you dont have a black thumb. Last year was a rough gardening year with the drought and heat. Lets hope this year will be better.
Suzanne - what does your hydrengia look like right now? I have one in the back yard and it dosent have much going on. Just a few new leaves. I pruned all the dead stuff off on Sat. in hopes of spuring some new growth.

It probably is a yucca plant. Be careful, they can be sharp. Good Luck planting stuff

Im not sure but I thought Hydrandrea bushes bloomed in the summer and fall...so I would think your plants wouldnt start looking alive for another few weeks.

Re: 4/21/03 QOTD: What do you plant in your front/back yard?
my hydras are just starting to show some green leaves...no other buds tho.
Front-house came with a large planter box...dwarf red tree...and I planted some gold and green bushes last y. It also alreayd had this green shrub- dunno what it is but it is pretty. and some HUGE GRAY stones- cannot lift them. Behind this are 3 large pine trees. lost some braches due to the heavy snows. Rob just pruned them back on sat - they needed a trim badly.
Side- planters were filled with small gray rocks and a small evergreen shrub. not much sun here
Back- we just used the roto-tiller Sat and dug up where we wanted a lawn. Rob put down seed and watered. I hope he has better luck this yr. Last yr we over seeded and every time he mowed, it came up in clumps!
And we have a small veggie garden in back too. this yr we will plant FEWER tomatoes...maybe only 4, maybe a pepper plant, and we will try eggplants again. and of course our herbs: dill, rosemary, chives, basil

Re: 4/21/03 QOTD: What do you plant in your front/back yard?
We so some major planting every spring. Last year we did impatiens in the front of the house, but they require a lot of water and wilt a lot in direct sunlight. So this year we are going to plant begonias in our front area. Along the driveway we do a bunch of stuff - mostly annuals. Our window boxes we do petunias. The back is lined with hostas and I plant impatiens inbetween them. The lady who lived in the house before us had tons of black-eyed susans and they bloom all over every summer!!
Right now our forsythia is looking good

Have you noticed how vivid the forsythias are this year? There are tons of them on the Southern State bright bright yellow they are so beautiful. We have a good sized one in the back that looks beautiful right now.
