a basil question (lots of these lately...)

I just read that if I buy fresh basil, it will stay fresh for at least a week it I trim the stems and store it in a glass of water and change the water daily. has anyone ever done this? I want to keep fresh basil so i can make my favorite cream cheese tomato and basil sandwhiches at home instead of buying them from Pret.

:)

That works just as well as cutting off the stems and placing them in a ziplock with a damp papertowel.

Either way you get about 4-5 days out of it.

Also, you can put fresh basil leaves into ice cube trays and freeze them for the winter. Defrost them, and you have fresh basil for soups and sauces!

i always do this and for me it doesnt work. rachel ray usuailly says put it in a large ziplock in your fridge but make sure to put just a paper towel in there with it to take up the moisture and keep it fresh longer...worth a shot. So sad my basil plant on our front deck is dunzo.

eta: woops someone already suggested! sorry. but not sure if its supposed to be damp or not.
