A lot of name-change Qs..

Got our marriage certificate in the mail yesterday, but I'm clueless about what I'm supposed to do now.

1. If I want to make my maiden name my middle name but our marriage certificate doesn't say that, can I still do it? How?

2. Is there one thing I need to change first before changing the rest? Does it need to be done in person?

3. Long shot but if you're a bride who got married in NY but are currently living out of state, how do you do everything?

4. Does any of the name change stuff cost $$$?

5. Can someone bump the info thread on this kind of stuff...

thank you!

I have questions, too! The boards seem to be dead lately!

I already started calling my credit card companies and stuff to have them send me new cards with my new name. I need to go to my bank w/ DH to have him added to my checking account, and have my name changed on the account, too. I also need to go to the SS office and the DMV - I think SS should come first though.

I think you can still do the middle name thing, you should do SS first, go to the closest office to you--you can do this anywhere, you don't have to go in NY. Look up online to find the closest office. I went and it took about 30 min waiting, and 10 min once I was up there. You need to bring the certificate and some other proofs of identity I think, it should say on the site. At SS you lock in what your name will be. They will send you your SS card in the mail--I got mine in about a week. Once you have that it makes it easier to do the rest! I think it did cost something but if so it was minimal. I don't quite remember...also you can do this by mail, but it will take a lot longer b/c you need to mail in your certificate, wait for it to come back. I would just go in person.

As for DMV, I do live out of NY, but I changed my license to NJ (I had PA before) so it was much more complicated for me. If you are trying to keep a NY license you need to go in NY. If you are switching to where you live now, or already have an out of state license, then you need to go in that state. It varies by state what you will need to bring. Also varies by state what the cost will be.

For credit cards I was able to just change online. Banks I needed to provide a copy of the marriage certificate, either in person or fax/mail. Insurance I switched to DH's insurance so we were just adding me, so I didn't need any of that stuff, just like adding a new person to a policy. Most other things should be pretty easy!

HTH!!
