did any here hired movers when moving to a new place?
I am trying to figure out a budged for moving and have no idea how this works. what determines the price?
does distance factor in? and how about the amount of stuff?

Re: a moving questions about movers lol

DH's job paid for movers, and they also packed everything. It was the most wonderful experience ever. I highly recommend it.

They look at how much stuff you have, if there are a lot of very delicate/fragile items, and distance you are moving. They gave us an estimate based on the square footage of the place we used to live, but it wound up being a lot less because of they said we had less stuff than the average people with that amount of square footage.

ETA: Our move was from the Cincinnati, OH area to the Philadelphia, PA area (a little more than 10 hours), so that was our biggest expense!

thanks Laura!
based on that how much do u think I should expect to get quoted for a move across the street? we have very little stuff but the ones we do are big couches and huge desk and a bunch of clothes and closed boxes from wedding presents
I am really nervous...

Re: a moving questions about movers lol

we used movers! we moved from brooklyn to queens, we packed ourselves and moved as much 'smaller' stuff as possible but had them do the furniture and heavy boxes. For a move between boroughs it was very reasonable - I think like $350? I forget the name of the movers I have to ask DH but across the street you should be able to get a reasonable quote!

Re: a moving questions about movers lol

price is a factor of:
hours, amount of stuff being moved, if it needs to be wrapped/packaged, if its fragile, the amount of ppl that they send, and distance

you can call places for a free estimate

i moved with flatrate before and i just called around and they still came in at the lower end of the price range and they wrap everything for you

free estimate, check them out

Re: a moving questions about movers lol

Janis they would give an estimate even if we dont have an actual address and just the bldng complex we are prob gonna be moving to? I was thinking about calling but all of the estimate forms asked for a specific destination address

thanks everyone for the input

yup, but if its NOT an elevator building, you will need to tell them how many flights up it is. that may impact price

Re: a moving questions about movers lol

LIterally the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life was NOT hiring movers when we moved into the house. We thought we didn't have that much stuff but it ended up taking DAYS and our bedroom furniture is ENORMOUS so that was a nightmare. I told DH I would divorce him if we don;t hire movers the next time we move.
