A trip to Spain

I am starting to plan our 1 yr anniversary trip and really want to go to Spain. Has anyone been there? Any suggestions on where to stay? Things to do? We will be going in May 2008. Thanks!

YAY!!! YOu are going to have so much fun. I'm from Seville the southern part of Spain. I've been all over Spain and I've always found the Southern portion to be the most welcoming to foreigners, especially Americans. See if you can visit a city up north like Madrid or Barcelona and a city down south like Seville or Cadiz.

FM me if you have any questions.

Ps. Did you know that part of the remains of Christopher Columbus are in a tomb in one of hte Cathedrals in Seville??? I thought that was th ecoolest thing when I was a kid!!

Definitely Barcelona!!! I recommend going to see La Sagrada Familia church (designed by Gaudi) - its amazing!! check out any of Gaudi's stuff while you're there. Las Ramblas is the name of a main street there with lots of shopping/attractions. I also remember going to a strip with lots of bars/clubs by the water, but I don't remember the name of the street. Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Here's a pic of the church. Enjoy!!

Wow, that's sound like fun! Here is a good website I found
http://www.spain.info/ . It has lots of useful info about Spain.

For hotels I always use trip advisor for reviews it's a great website with pictures of hotels from guests. Barcelona Hotels

So DH and I decided were going to stay at the Le Meridian in Barcelona. Its right in the center of Las Ramblas and near all of the major sites, it also looks like a great hotel. The tourist website you gave me is great! I already have an entire list of things we need to do!

Re: A trip to Spain

I've been to Spain twice, the first time we went to Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian and Valencia. The second time we went to San Sebastian so I highly recommend it. If you're a foodie then you must go to San Sebastian. Akelara and Arzak are two Michelin 3 stars there. Both have innovative menus and Akelare has an amazing view. Besides the fine restaurants, San Sebastian is know for its Pinxtos which is their version of tapas. Every street in the Old town is filled with bars which serve these pinxtos. You can go from bar to bar, fill up on food and beer/wine/cider etc and they're very inexpensive. We stayed at Hotel Monte Igueldo which also had an amazing view. My next favorite city was Madrid.
There's so much to do and eat there. I dont' remeber what hotel I stayed in. I didn't like valencia and although I'm glad I went to Barcelona I don't think I would visit there again. We stayed by Las Ramblas and to me that was a big mistake. Its very dirty, full of drunken college kisd. Every night I would see kids either throwing up on the strret or urinating in the middle of the street and every morning all the businesses would hose off their sidewalks because they were covered in vomit and pee.
We also went to Figueres to see Salvador Dali's house and museum. We only went there on a day trip and I'm not sure if there's anything to do there besides the museum but I highly recommend the museum.
Next time we go back we want to go to a restaurant called El Bulli in Catelonia, Spain.

While in Spain you must drink cava, eat at Bar jamon (a ham chain with locations everywhere) try both seranno and Iberico ham, try the munkfish (aka Rape) and eat Trout (trucha)
