I have never had an abnormal pap before. Should I be freaking out? The doctor said he found 'pre-cancerous cells' and that I need to come in for a colposcopy and further testing. Please tell me this has happened to you....

Re: Abnormal Pap
My mom had an abnormal pap a couple of years ago. They just made her go to get a test 2x a year instead of 1 to keep on eye on it. She's been fine.

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had this happen to me about 5 years ago. I went in for a colposcopy and in the process they biopsied some cells from my cervix. Everything came back normal. The procedure was a little painful and I had some spotting afterwards, but it wasn't horrible. I know a lot of people who have had one, and all of them have turned out to be nothing. I am sure you will be fine.
Take 2 motrin or advil before you go.

It may be something but probably nothign Honey. Happened to my mom-well soemthing similar. For her was breast cysts which turned out not to be cancerous but they put her on meds for 10 years as preventitive measures. She's been fine since. we'll cross our fingers for you. Keep us updated.

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had this in 2002. I was only 18. I had biopsy done & hten my gyno suggested that I have a LEEP procedure done. It was an outpaitent procedure done in a hospital. After that the test came back negative.I have to have paps 2x a year now & it have ok since then. I am going back to doing paps once a year in 2008.

Re: Abnormal Pap
I'm having a colposcopy tomorrow b/c I had 2 abnormal paps. I FREEEEEEEEEEAKED out but the way it was explained to me was that there are more capabilities to test for certain things now... so it has become very common that people are having abnormal paps as opposed to when we were younger...
I'm sure everything will be fine with me, and you too.
My cousin, sister and friend all had to go through this.

the doctor talked to me for like 20 minutes in painstaking detail & now I'm a nervous wreck!
Good luck tomorrow!

Re: Abnormal Pap
although I have never had an abnormal pap I went to my doctor because I woke up one morning and lost my hearing in my left ear. I went to the doctor who FREAKED ME OUT, told me I had a lesion growing in my ear and if he were me he would go to see a specialist right away. So I freaked out was in tears DH left his job to take me to see a specialist right then and it was a blister from an infection I had. So the moral is its probably nothing major and try not to freak out.

Re: Abnormal Pap
been there too...biopsy came back as 'pre-cancerous'...I opted for laser treatment of the bad cells...this was way back in like '99...they knock you out...zap the bad cells & i woke up like nothing ever happened..i usually get a pap every 6 months...have had bad ones since...but then when i was re-tested they were fine! Don't stress...although i know when it happened to me i did! FM if you have any ?'s!!!!

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had the same thing happen to me. Pe-cancerous cells. They gave me some Motrin before I went in, and then froze them.I chose not to be knocked out becauseof my tolerance to pain, but I don't suggest it,if you CAN'T tolerate pain. My paps have been normal ever since. You'll be fine. This is a common thing now a days.

Re: Abnormal Pap
i've had an abnormal pap--then had to do the thing where they scrape cells to test again.
and then after that they had to cryo-thingy where they litterally froze the walls inside my---well u know---and then for the next 3 wks tissue and something that looked like coffee grinds came out of me. it was awful. but in the end i was fine
abnormal paps are VERY common--i wouldn't worry too much about it. just talk with your doctor and figure out the next step!

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had that a few years ago...I went for a colposcopy and the test confirmed what the gyno had said - precancerous cells. She also told me though that usually, in healthy women, these scars that caused the abnormal pap disappear within 6 months. I went back to her office six months later, retook the pap and it was normal. I'm due for another one in the next few weeks and hopefully it'll be normal once again. Like u I got extremely nervous when I originally found out about my abnormal pap, but I did some research online and found out it can be quite common and is not an alarming situation if you take care of it the right way. I'm sure everything will be fine!
