? about TY - different gift

It's not that the gift is so weird - it's just that I don't know how to thank the person for this gift. Unfortunately, DH doesn't like this person so I can't get him to help me. Here is some background information: This person (who was not invited but gave us a gift anyway because we were babysitting his cat for a year) gave us a serving set or pieces that he found when he lived in England. This serving piece is a fork and something like a cheese knife (the knife is not sharp). I don't think it was meant to be used as it is an antique - it might even be Victorian style, but I'm not sure. It is sitting on top of our China closet so it's not on display. We do appreciate the gesture, but I would like to write something a little more than 'Thank you for the gift. It was very nice of you to think of us on our wedding day.'

Any suggestions?

I would say something like:

DH and I were so touched by your thoughtful gift. We were so happy to receive such a lovely antique serving set. We'd love to hear about it's history next time we see you! It will always have a special place in our home.

Essentially, you want to thank them and make a specific reference to the gift, and how you will use it or enjoy. That makes it personal.
