Adding spouse to insurance

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope someone is able to help.

Were any of you ladies able to add DH to your insurance before the wedding? Correct me if I am wrong since I am a while away from applying for a marriage license, but since a couple applies for a license 60 (?) days before the wedding, is that good enough for the insurance companies to add him, or do I have to wait until after the actual wedding? I cant seem to find the answer to this question anywhere, so I would like to know what experiences others had with this.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Adding spouse to insurance

IMO - I don't believe you can do it because you need to get the official license from the State. The piece of paper you currently have if not used will expire in x amount of days. Whoever the the clergy of choice doing your wedding must fill out the information and mail it to the marriage license bureau.

I don't think this applies if you are actually getting married right at the town hall. I would call the licensing bureau to be 100% accurate.

Re: Adding spouse to insurance

Thanks for the reply! I didnt think I would be able to do it, but with the new changes that some insurances are making (such as domestic partners, and alternative therapies) I thought I would give it a shot.

Anyone else have any input? Thanks in advance!

Re: Adding spouse to insurance

I'd ask your HR person. You might be able to fill out the forms before and make the effective date the date of your wedding. My insurance carrier did not require a copy of the marriage license.

Re: Adding spouse to insurance

I just filled out the forms and gave them to our HR director before I left to get married. My company also changed health insurance at the same time so it made it easier for me.
