Alzheimer's Disease

Original post by Kimbalina

Has anyone had any experiece with this with a love one?
My Grandpa, (papa) has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. I have done some Wikipedia and WebMD research, but really still am not sure what more to expect. My Papa is very important to me, I consider him to be more of a father then grandpa. We are extremelly close and I am jut miserable knowing he and us are going to be fighting this disease.

Re: Alzheimer's Disease

Hey if you have any questions feel free to FM me. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Also the Alzheimer's Association website has some really good information. They have a local chapter office on Vet's highway to that can be a great resource center. I work for an assisted living and I am the program specialist for the life guidance neighborhood which is a special secure neighborhood for residents with alzheimer's and dementia. I am here if you need me.

Re: Alzheimer's Disease

Sorry you are going through this. My grandfather on my dad's side had alzheimers. He would turn the stove on and then forget to turn it off. Towards the end he really only recognized my father. He would call me by my grandmother's name who had passed many years before. It was hard watching it happen. Just try to be there for him as much as you can. It;s a very hard disease on everyone.

Re: Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease. My grandmother started with it about 10 years ago, maybe more. She was placed about 4 years ago and has deteriorated rapidly since then.

I can tell you the good and bad but that all depends on what you want to hear.

FM me if you want.

Re: Alzheimer's Disease

I'm so sorry
My Nana (my great grandma) will be 95 years old on Feb 24th (god bless her) and she is suffering from Alzheimer's. It's really hard for me to see her go through this. Right now, she is in a nursing home getting radiation treatment for bone cancer. The doctors say that she may not survive radiation because of her age and the Alzheimers. The worst part about it, she doesn't even know who I am. When I was growing up, my family all lived in one house. On the middle floor, my grandparents took care of my Nana (grandmas mom), so we were really close. She tought me to knit and crochet and I helped her in her fig garden all the time. She was 85 planting a garden.

When the Alzheimers hit, the first stages weren't that bad. My Aunt had to care for her and she had to move in with her because my grandma then got sick. I didn't see her as much, but she remembered who I was up until about 3 years ago. Now, I rarely go see her because it just hurts to much. She (obviously) didn't make it to my wedding but she did come to my shower. She didn't even reconize me. . When we go see her, DH helps her into the wheel chair and pushes her around the nursing home, just to get her out of bed. She likes to sit by the pond and watch the fish. She said it reminds her of the happy times. She now sees DH as the nice young man that pushes her around in the wheel chair to the pond.

She thinks I am my mom and she asks me about my husband (my dad). She askes me about my kids (which is really me and my brothers). The first couple times I did this, I tried to correct her and she says no and gets upset. The doctors told me to just listen and agree with her. It's strange because she'll call me my moms name and then ask me about my wedding (really my wedding). It's actually upsetting that she does this. The doctors say that she will remember me the way I was, but she gets confused, that's why she calls me by my mothers name. They also say that it's gotten to the point were she can't retain barely any new information. Sometimes she asks me about how school is. At first, I thought she was referring to college so I was excited to see she remembered I was going to school again. Then, she asked me 'What grade are you in, I'm sure your in middle school by now'.

People say that it's wrong of me not to go see her, but I can't. I still go, maybe once a week, but it hurts something terrible that she don't remember me. I'd like to remember her planting figs and knitting, not struggling to eat and sit up in her bed. She doesn't even know she has cancer. She doesn't even know where she is. It's just horrible.

Hopefully, they can help your Papa before he gets like my Nana. Maybe because they caught it in the early stages, they can do more to help him. Supposidly, it doesn't start getting bad for a while. Depends on how severe it is I guess. I will pray for him, because I'd hate to see him, you and your family go through this.

Re: Alzheimer's Disease

Kim my nonno had this as well.... it is a long hard road a head of you, but like others have said, do what you can now. Motivate him, make him tell you stories about the past, about when he was a younger man. When you see he is forgetting something and seems to get fustrated with himself, you talk to him about something, get his mind off of what he was trying to remember.

It is going to be ok..... if you need anything FM me. Your grandfather will be in my prayers
