My grandmother new the family who bought it from the Lutz family. They made up a story, sold it to a horror writer and then sold it to my grandmother's friend without telling them they were writing a horror film about the house. They were trying to get rich quick... which is why they also filed lawsuits against everyone who spoke out against their claims.
They said the only thing scary about living there was the crazy people who would see the film and then go to see a house and would take things from it and take pictures with it, etc.
My parents also knew the kid who killed his family... they said he was so drugged up all the time. So pretty sure it wasn't house spirits that made him do it.

Thanks for sharing the article though... my husband is obsessed with this story, even though I keep telling him its false. NJ boy, he doesn't get it. Anyhow I sent it to him, he will love it.

YES! I grew up in Massapequa (not in the Plainedge district where the house is though, in the Massapequa school district), and my friends would drive there when we first got our licenses! It's architecture is beautiful, but it's def. creepy.

somebody told me that the house was changed, like the looks of it from the outside so that people wouldn't be able to recognize it. idk if it's true tho....

I'm reading a ghost/mystery book with my seventh graders and it is about a family who move into a house that is haunted. I'm going to do a text-to-world connection activity and have them write stories today as if they are moving into the Amityville Horror House! This could not have come at a better time!

I'd buy it if DH and I could afford it! My mom lives a few blocks from there - the house is GORGEOUS!
And yes, they did change the front of the house and the house number to try to scare off the gawkers. The Amityville P.D. closes off the street just about every Halloween.
