Okay I have to vent because its my final time EVER going to Petco. I always have issues on how they keep their reptiles but today its over fish. Most people think fish who gives a flying f but any creature to me shouldn't be neglected.
I go to Petco to see what they have in stock for bettas since i have a new setup and I am completely HORRIFIED. They have two tortoises with herpes on them for sale (most people can't tell but i can) which can lead to serious health issues for the tortoise.
Then they have betta fish in massive amounts in stock and I am looking at them and the water is filthy, they are closed up in containers (no air) some are dead and rotted in the container. I was pulling dead fish out and placing it on a stock shelf to show them. Why order soo many fish if you know your not going to sell that many - no one needs 40+ betta fish in stock at one time.
I went to a small pet store and completely diff. setup and far more healthier. The pets are not stressed and the fish are healthy. Going there from now on. I realize petco is nice and has adoption center for animals in need but for the most part this company does not train their staff on most of the animals they sell nor do they care about who they sell these animals to. 12 year old kids shouldn't be able to walk in alone and walk out with a rat - sorry to say that rat is going to be dead or one parent will march back in there pretty pissed off.
Just please consider your local pet shops that are not corporate conglomerates and please care for any living thing you own.

Wow that is horrible. It always disturbs me to see any animal neglected, even a fish. Did either store offer up any kind of explanation for what you saw while you were there??

That is just horrible and so sad. There's a really cute pet store that i usually go to in Patchogue. It's probably too far out for you but it's so nice and they are so good to their pets in there. BTW what ever happened with the turtle that you found last year?

My new mother in law used to work there, and she quit because of how they kept their animals. She said some of the animals were being delivered with broken legs...sad stuff. I also try to keep away from them. I have started to going to Total Pet Care in Holbrook...great stock...a lot more options...and a lot cheaper!

oh man jenn that's gross. i used to have a betta, i love them. did they have more than one betta in a tank at once? I heard that was a no-no unless you wanted a bunch of dead fish.
i used to go to a great aquarium / fish store on broadway in massapequa, not too far from the cvs ... not sure if it is still there but i kinda thought you lived over in that area? it was a great store, nice staff too. and there is a good one near voice rd. in carle place - in the same parking lot as ac moore i think? or in the next shopping center on glen cove road, can't remember exactly. big selection.

Re: Annoyed at Petco major vent.
they just looked at me like i was a freak (which i am use too but man was i angry.) All the betta's were separate at petco just in filth. The tank setups were fine just other stuff was all wrong. I just wished Petco didn't sell tortoises and turtles and now betta's they just don't know what to do with them.
Turtle is good he is with me(Corrigan is his name) all four of my turtles are in their winter setups inside in our bedroom two 50 gal tubs one for the male and one for the females. They wake up when our heat is up too high but i try to keep the window cracked open so they sleep more. I get to build them a new outdoor enclosure in the spring so it will be bigger and cooler with a possible fountain for them to soak in.
There is a tropical fish store right near petco in w. babylon just can't remember the name. I went in there and I think i am sticking with them. Very nice people. they did house a few female betta fish together but since reading about betta's i found out you can house females in groups of three as long as they are use to each other. But I am sticking with a male betta and pairing him with a corey or another easy going fish that doesn't screw with the betta.
Glad to see people do care about any pet, i just get sad thinking those poor creatures sitting in a closed chinese food container in its filth.
I will check out the other stores as well since I have time on Saturday before the bach party and dh is working. Thanks!

You can report them if it's in Suffolk to the SPCA..they are serious about what they do and say no animal is too big or too small. Here's some info....they are part of law enforcement...and can and will prosecute if laws are broken!
Suffolk County SPCA (different than the ASPCA) Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 631-382-SPCA The Suffolk County SPCA is a local, independent not-for-profit organization that provides for the humane needs, requirements, and enforcement of cruelty to animal laws in Suffolk County. If you suspect any mistreatment, abuse, or blood sport activities involving animals, please call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-SPCA. You can also contact the Suffolk County Police Department. All calls will be kept confidential. web site: http://www.suffolkspca.org/
They are in the process of building a Petco out here in Hampton Bays I am doing my best to support the local small pet store instead!

I would totally report them. I would also go as far as to go to that store myself, and say something and report them as well.
I hate how people don't think that fish need to be taken care of as well as a cat or a dog might have to be.
It makes me so angry just to read this, b/c I want to go smack some people around. =( stupid Petco.
I hope something is done and alot of people complain.

I know what you mean about Petco. Last year we bought a Beta and some guppies. First of all, the guy was so nasty when we asked for the fish like we were bothering him. He questioned my DH about whether he had a tank set up, meanwhile my DH has even had a reef tank and knows all about taking care of them. He knows better than me and could tell that many of them were sick. And don't get me started about the way they take care of the Bettas. We bought the prettiest one there and he died so quickly. Most of the guppies died so we ended up going to this place right off the LIE...I think it's Patchogue but I can't remember the name. It's really nice and they have a lot.

report them!
i had a similair experience at a petco in staten island when buying a betta fish.....most were half dead - and we saw a few that actually were dead! i was horrified - we ended up buying one there just so we could save him, we hated giving money to the store but we felt so bad for the one healthy looking fish that we just had to save him

Re: Annoyed at Petco major vent.
That is just wrong and gross. I have to be honest, I don't know much about fish so if I went into a pet store I wouldn't know which ones should and should not be together -- BUT I would know that the tank should not be dirty and there should not be dead fish decaying in it either.
There used to be a store in RVC that was supposed to be really good. Not sure if it is still there or not.

Thanks for this info --I going to share it with my parents. Unfortunately they have issues with the dog that lives next door to them. The dog is not taken care of properly and therefore is extremely aggressive and is always loose.

I agree Petco should be reported. I live by the one in Patchogue and its horrible. I feel so bad for these animals. There is a better place I go to on 112 in patchogue called Country Critterss, they are very nice and the guys in the fish department are very educated with the fish.
