another christening question

I am at my wits end with this christening! I have never been a godmother so I am not sure what is expected of the god parents. My sister in law (our baby's godmother) called the other day and asked us to find out what my husbands friend (our baby's godfather) bought as a gift for the christening. She said she bought our baby a gold cross and chain. So my husband asked his friend and he was upset because he was told by someone else that it is the godfathers responsibility to buy the cross and the godmothers responsibility to buy the dress (which she already did). Now my husband wants to tell his sister this and his friend is upset (I think he might have bought the cross already!). HELP!!!! If anyone knows exactly what is expected of a godmother and godfather...please let me know!

I dont think there are any hard and fast rules here. Tradition varies from family to family.

Since you chose these people to be Godparents of your child they must be very close to you - so dont be afraid to talk to them. I would let them both know how appreciative you are of their participation in your childs christening and life. If her Godfather gives a cross I would put it on her on her Christening day, since she will be wearing the gown given to her by her Godmother. I would mention the gift of the other cross if the opportunity presented itself. And remember a girl can never have too much jewlery!

Well, yes I agree that it would be a good idea to talk to these people but they seem to be so touchy about the whole 'godparent' thing. Also, I have no family here in NY..only my mom so we decided on who the godparents would be from my husbands side of the family and his friends, so I guess my husband feels that he should be the one to say something if it should be said.
Personally, no one has to buy our baby anything (and I have said this!) I am just happy to have her baptised in our church with family and friends there.

Beck
As a Godmother to two wonderful boys, I can understand their excitement. While I love all the children in my life these two hold an extra special place in my heart. My older Godson is now 16. His Godfather is his Uncle and my Cousin, when he was Christened there was a little back and forth about who would do what between us (mostly by me -I hate to admit now) but that phased out after a few years. My Husband and I are now Godparents to our Nephew and being a couple we couldnt be more pleaseed to share this role.

I guess what I am trying to say is it sounds like your daughters Godparents are honored to have been chosen and want to show how proud they are to have been choosen for this very special role in your daughters life.

Fran;
I hear what you are saying and I don't mean to be ungrateful. I know and appreciate their excitement. I wish I had a godchild to dote over! I wish there were better lines of communication and that their feelings wouldn't seem to be hurt so easily. I would be honored for her to wear both crosses on her special day so it wouldn't be an issue. It just seems that they are getting caught up in this 'I am the godmother/godfather and I am expected to do this and that'. We are just happy that they will be there with our baby.

Beck, I wouldn't say anything to either godparent about what is 'expected' or 'traditional.' Nothing seems to hold true anymore, anyway. I think you should accept both of their gifts graciously on the baby's behalf. I don't think it matters that the baby will have two gold crosses. When she's older, they will both be equally special to her.

For now, just be thankful that you have these two wonderful people to share such a special role in your daughter's life.
Enjoy the day!

I don't think I expressed myself the right way...The godparents are worried about doing what is expected and traditional, not me. I would be happy for them just to be godparents and not worry about anything else! They are going back and forth (thru me and my husband) about whose responsibility it is to buy her a cross. I would be just as happy if they both gave her one or if neither gave her one. We didn't pick them because of what they could give her but because of what they could bring to her life by just being themselves. I think they are so worried about doing what godparents are 'supposed' to do that they lost sight of why we picked them.
