Emergency landing after engine fire on LI-bound 8:10 AM EST, February 13, 2009
An engine on a Long Island-bound Southwest Airlines flight from Las Vegas burst into flames shortly after take off Thursday, but the pilot was able to make a successful landing back at the Las Vegas airport, an Southwest spokeswoman said.
Whitney Eichinger, a Southwest Airlines spokeswoman, said the plane with 121 on board -- 116 passengers and 5 crew members -- was a Boeing 737 scheduled to fly nonstop from McCarran International Airport to Long Island MacArthur Airport.
The pilot was able to turn off the engine and land the plane about 3:30 p.m., Eichinger said. There were no injuries, and passengers were placed on another Southwest plane to go on to Long Island, she said. The cause of the engine mishap is under investigation, Eichinger said

oh no i am getting so freaked out with all these plane stories right now, dh is coming home tonight and all this is like the 3rd story ive heard.

the biggest news in the story....since when does Southwest fly nonstop to LI? Just kidding, I'm glad everyone is ok. This stuff is getting out of hand!

Try not to stress...in reality you are in much more danger driving in a car! MY DH used to fly internationally all the time for business so i know how you feel!

yeah its funny bc i never am afraid to fly, and always say what you do, something is more likely to happen to you in a car than flying. I need to keep telling myself this, thank you
