Is it true that antibiotics really affect your birth control? I was casually speaking with a friend about taking amoxicillin from Tues to Sat and then got nasty with DH Sunday and now she has me all worried.

I took the cillin three times a day from last Tuesday and took my last one this past Saturday. However, I got the call from my doctor Saturday afternoon and she told me I could stop taking them. Last night we got busy and were not thinking.

Oh yes...if you are taking antibiotics on birth control, you might as well not take bc at all. Im a nurse...so I know that it really does affect it. And some of the stronger cold meds too. Hope that helps!!

It's true. Thats how my friend got pregnant and the surprise baby she wasn't ready for yet. It absolutely does. Which is why my doctor ALWAYS tells me to use a backup method when on anything else.

It definitely does, when I was on BCP my doctors always told me to be careful whenever they prescribed me antibiotics.

About 1 1/2 ago, I was filling a prescription for antibiotics. I looked and felt like death warmed over. DH was with me and the pharmacist called me over to speak with me privately.
He tells me to 'Be sure to tell my partners (yes, plural!)' that I was taking antibiotics and that it might interfere with the pill.
It was so hard not to laugh -- seriously, how many partners do you think I was going to have looking and feeling like that!

Thanks everyone for their advice. DH (Mike) did buy the plan B because we can't afford any surprises.
However, we both spoke about it after reading up on it and said if we were to find out I ever get pregnant before we plan, we will get through it. It's just that I have one more year before I am LCSW eligible (social work wording) and can't wait to change companies.

Man, then either I'm as barren as the desert or DH is shootin blanks, cuz I've NEVER used a backup method on Antibiotics and I've never been preggo. Nice that my docs never told me that though! Sheesh! But yeah, one of us must be infertile because I get strep at least once or twice a year and take antibiotics for it and never used backup.

sorry to crash
but I wouldn't worry at all
there are no studies that show that those antibiotics decrease the effect of birth control
the only antibiotic proven to affect BCP's is a tuberculosis drug
same goes for the cold medications
it was 20+ years ago when this thought process came out, the old school docs are the only ones who preach this
maybe allegra's doc is from the newer generation!
