Does anybody find the Elizabeth Smart story kind of strange? I am not sure what I have determined here – with my Super Sleuth skills! (we could use a magnifying glass Sherlock face here!). It just seems strange…maybe I don’t know enough about the story, but from what I understand, they hired this kind of peddler guy off the street who is known in the area as being sort of the town weirdo guy and nobody suspected him of being the possible culprit? Isn’t it weird? AND they were like in her backyard essentially in a teepee while the search was going on!!! Do you think she was brainwashed? And if so, how does brainwashing work really? Do you think she was held against her will there? I completely don’t expect to get detailed information as I totally agree this family’s privacy should be respected at all costs. But from a spectator’s standpoint…it’s really fishy!

Re: Any detectives out there?
Honestly, after a while, I thought she ran away and was not kidnapped. I thought it was strange that they would be walking around the street practically one town over as if the whole nation has not been looking for her for the past 9 months. But I don't have a very informed opinion since I missed most of the news last night.

Re: Any detectives out there?
It seems as though she was brainwashed by that nomadic wanderer guy. I agree Jenny, the story sounds weird. How could she say she heard people calling her name but not be able to answer? That is why I think she was either brainwashed or drugged. I am intrigued by the story but I feel awful for the family to have to deal with all this media now and possible reprocussions it might have on Elizabeth about what actually went on.

Re: Any detectives out there?
I told my DH last night that we shouldn't have HOme Depot come in to do our kitchen over. I said that I found this guy who begs for $$ everyday outside my office and he offered to do it instead! I feel so lucky, isn't that awesome, all I have to do is LET HIM IN MY HOUSE and he'll do whatever needs to be done. Or, I said we could wait until we had a beautiful daughter and then let this man in to work on our house..... What the hell is the matter with these people??? If you feel bad for the guy, buy him a freakin cup of coffee and a bagel, but don't open your house to him!! I finf this whole thing very fishy....JMO.

Totally agree with all of you - the whole thing stinks to me.
I dont care how stupid you are - what functioning person would let this nutjob into their house?

Re: Any detectives out there?
She must have been drugged or brainwashed....because if you think of it, she is 15 years-old. I'm sure a 15 year-old would know how to call for help or know how to get back home since they were in a surrounding area. Seems very wierd.

Re: Any detectives out there?
I agree with Stef, who would let a KNOWN pedler/town oddball into their own home?
As for Elizabeth not going for help, I once read a book based on fact about a woman that was held captive for a couple of years. Even after she was given freedom to leave the house on her own, she still went back toher captors.

I don't think they knew about him, I think he worked for one of the contractors that the Smarts uned on the house. You know, like they do here, pick up a bunch of people off the street corners in the morning to work for the day. It makes you think, these people are doing things in our homes, and our yards, etc.

Re: Any detectives out there?
What I heard on the news last night is the that the mother met this nutball on the street and then hired him to do some work. So it wasnt like she didnt know where he was coming from. At least, thats how they described it on the news - who knows how much of it is fact.
On the brainwashing note - I dont buy it. In order to brainwash someone you need months and months of seclusion as well as being pretty bright to get it accomplished. First - this guy cant be all that smart if he is a street roamer and lives in a teepee. Second - ok, after 9 months its possible she was brainwashed, but what stopped her from running after a few weeks?

Re: Any detectives out there?
They probably drugged her or threatened to hurt her family if she ever tried to run.

Re: Any detectives out there?
I read on CNN that he took her to GA and CA immediately after the kidnapping and just recently returned to Utah. From there, combined with fear or retraint, she would not be able to flee.

Re: Any detectives out there?
I was wondering the same thing. Why would the woman pay a complete stranger $5.00 to come and do work in her house? I would understand if she had him do some yard work or something, but in her house????

Re: Any detectives out there?
The other weird thing -- and this is a minute thing-- but the Nancy Drew in me makes me think. She was sharing a room with her sister. Their home is 6,600 square feet!! Wouldn't you think they would each have their own room? It's such a small detail but that seems weird to me too. The whole thing is weird, but I'm glad she was found and alive. It is a great story to hear instead of all the horrible stuff we usually hear on the news.
The family in general seems a bit weird to me.

Re: Any detectives out there?
apparently, they are mormons and this is what they do. Please don't crucify me if this is not accurate(this is what I was told.) They have to do 'the will of God' and help those less fortunate than them. Helping him, fine, like I said, buy him a meal, give him a few bucks, but invite him to your house allowing him access to your children.....sorry, I don't care what religion you are, that's fu*king nuts!!!

You're right Stef, why would they share a room? Everyone loves to have their own room and that house is huge.Hmmmmmm?

Re: Any detectives out there?
I am NOT going to point blame on the family right now. I think they were just trying to be nice to this manAnd remember they are from Utah, not NYC so maybe they have a more trusting attitude then we do. I am SURE that this couple- remember there was a women with him- told the girl that he would kill her family, drugged her or whose knows what. All I can say is that I hope they have a good therapist to help this entire family.

Another little detail that doesnt sit right with me - the window was open in the girls bedroom. Hmmm....a 6600 square foot house in Utah without central air conditioning?
