I graduated in 05 with a BS in Criminal Justice. I'm going back this Fall 2010 to get my Master's in Rehabilitation Teaching Orientation and Mobility (RT/O&M) for Blindness and Visual Impairment. Any tips or advice? It's been close to five yrs since I graduated so a lot has changed. If you can give me on some updates on what to expect for grad school, I'll really appreciate your help! Thanks so much ladies!!!

Re: Any ladies in grad school?
Hey, I work with college students every day and went to grad school in Student Affairs. From my observations--no matter where you are in your life--no one can possibly imagine what grad school is like . When I state that, I don't mean it in a bad way, it's just very overwhelming in the beginning and a different study habit than from undergrad. I graduated undergrad with a very high GPA, and I still felt overwhelmed. I think the best thing to remember is that EVERYONE feels that way in the beginning of grad school, and almost no one vocalizes it. Just keep up on all of your work and don't be afraid to ask your professors for help :). It's a great experience, just a lot of work!
ETA: Also, specifically in my program, usually the students that took a few years off to figure out what they wanted to go to grad school for wound up doing better...they were prepared and excited for the challenge! :)

Re: Any ladies in grad school?
I completed a masters in clinical nutrition and I am currently working on a PhD in neuroscience. My advice is take some time off this summer and relax! Seriously, take a few weeks for yourself before you start. Graduate school is not necessarily hard there is just a lot more work then in undergrad. For example the first few weeks of my Graduate Biochemisty covered the entire semester of undergrad biochem. The pace is fast therefore it is really important that you keep on top of your work. There is no way you can cram for finals in grad school at least not in either of the programs I have been in. One big mistake I made at the beginning of my PhD program was not asking for help as soon as I was having difficulty with a topic. Study with a group and do not be ashamed to ask for a tutor if necessary. Another potentially difficult adjustment is dealing with friends and family...although my family is very supportive they do not understand that I often cannot take a break even if it is Saturday or the day before a holiday.

Re: Any ladies in grad school?
I finished my masters in Environmental Engineering last May and I plan on going back in the Fall for my MBA. For me personally I find that grad school was easier. You are in class for a couple of hours a couple days a week rather than 5 days a week for sometimes 6-7 hrs. Grad teachers also know there are ppl that work full time so some may be more lenient on students. I also find that ppl in grad school usually want to be there so they take it more seriously rather than kids out of hs.
I would say enjoy your time off cause vacations and such will be dictated by your school schedule.

Re: Any ladies in grad school?
Cassie, Debi graduated in 1997, from Penn State with a BS in Human Dev. and Family Studies. She had found that most jobs that she qualified for were in the non-profit area; She worked for several yrs. helping handicapped folks get jobs, and is finishing seven yrs. as a Learning for Life executive with the Boy Scouts, because there is no more funding at her Council, for the Program. Knowing she was going to lose her job in June, she applied to Millersville U. /was accepted, for the fall, to get her Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling, which is in the area she did her internship. It's a three yr. program. Mary MOB
PS Deb was surprised that at the end of her studies, in addition to taking a Guidance Counseling exam, she must also take a Teachers' exam.

Re: Any ladies in grad school?
I'm full time!!!! M.S. Ed. 7-12, taking 12 credits
I don't find the work to be more difficult, just that the AMOUNT of work is substantially more than undergrad. A lot is weighed on presentations, research, discussion, group projects, rather than exams. Oh, and group projects, holy crap, I hate 'em. I go to school with some dumb-dumbs (sorry to be mean, but it's the truth, I don't know how some of them graduated HIGH school). Basically, it's harder now because everything is a balance - work, family, school - but the semester FLIES by so fast. Good luck!
