Any reason not to buy Bway tix 6 mo's on advance? Seating Question also...

Ladies, I really want to get tix to a bway show for this fall to surprise DH, but I worry about the what-ifs - like what if DH doesn't like the show, what if something comes up, etc.

Also, if I do get the tix, is the second row a good thing or a possibly not so good thing? I know front row is supposed to be amazing but I always think being so close doesn't allow you to get a great view of the entire stage. But I've never sat that close - usually sit about half way back.

What say you?

I went to see Rent a few years back and we had 4th row tickets. Not 2nd row but still the seats were amazing. We saw everything. And depending on the show, those seats will not be available less than 6 months away!! Good Luck!!

thx! I found 2nd row tix at ticketmaster for a bway show - i'm worried that its too girly though and would feel so bad if dh didn't like it.

DH and I have seen Aida and Rent on bway, but I worry that he may not like a Disney show.

My DH is funny like that...he actually enjoyed Beauty and the Beast and wants to see Mary Poppins because it was his favorite movie as a kid

I say get them now-so that you can be close-and mark your calendar (in your mind) for it, I would be worried that you wont have seats-if he doesnt like it...I dont know what to do about that one

What show are you thinking? I highly recommend Wicked. I've seen it twice and took DH the second time and he actually enjoyed it!! I saw 'Cry Baby' last night and would definitely not recommend it- don't waste your $$! But yeah- getting tkts in advance is the norm- you can get much better seats that way! I enjoy the 2nd row- I say go for it!

OK I realllllly want to see The Little Mermaid, found the tix online, but I don't want to be selfish and choose a show just because I like it, you know?

I have heard great things about Wicked but I'd prefer The lil mermaid, lol.

Forgot to mention that we've seen Avenue Q and O in las vegas too, which he loved.

okay - i've been going to broadway since i was 11 - it was my mom's gift to me every year for my birthday.

The only thing you risk with tickets that far out is cancellation of the show. You WILL get your money back if it does get cancelled, but you will not get money back if say, Terrance Mann is in the show now and in the 5 months, he's gone and you wanted to see him....ya follow?

I personally think that second row is WONDERFUL!!!!! However, if it's the first time seeing a show - it may be a little too close...you kinda want to be able to 'take it all in' as it were....

HOWEVER...if this is a show and not a musical, that changes and you will be okay to be that close. If it's a musical, you do kinda want to hang back and take it all in, but if it's a straight play - you'll be fine that close & love every second of it!

Wicked was SPECTACULAR & definitely a show he'd be more into - if this is a gift for DH.

I think we're going to see the Little Mermaid with a group of girlfriends and their daughters. The only perk to Mermaid for a guy is bikini tops on the girls :) (hope you know i'm teasing)

After reading the whole post - dontcha just LOVE people who reply before reading the whole thread... :)

After reading the whole thing and knowing you're talking about the Little Mermaid, i'd say go farther back....so you can enjoy it all and not miss anything from being too close...

thanks - i'd have ti wait to get orchestra seats further back since i think they sell seats from front to back etc. or i could try to get 1st mezz seats.

i still wonder if he'd like the show but there's no way to know that ahead of time - hence the dilemma in my head

Right....that's the tough part. Any chance on tix to see Spamalot? That was HYSTERICAL!!!!!! Something you can both enjoy. Also - my parents LOVED Young Frankenstein....LOVED it enough to wait for the cast to get autographs....

You could casually mention that you & the girls on the board were talking about shows you'd like to see and weren't sure if any of the guys would like to see them.....so you wanted his two cents. What shows would he like to see....etc... :)

Front Row Mezzanine are the best seats in the house in my opinion and some shows are already booked 6 months in advance (like Wicked)

GREAT IDEA JESS! Tell him this, it might work

I would also buy the tickets in advance especially if a show is popular.

As for seating, DH and I always get 4th- 5th row Orchestra no matter what. We always have a perfect view of everything no matter what the theater.

Also we saw Phantom and somehow they gave us front row tickets (DH swears he didn't know) and it wasn't bad just that it was a bit too loud for me.

If you go directly to the box office for the show they have a seating chart available and you can tell them how far that you want to be back.

Yesi, if you want Little Mermaid then I highly suggest you get them in advance...it's a hot ticket!

It's supposed to be amazing- as Disney as it is, he might be impressed by how they bring it to life on stage. If he's anything like my DH though, the cheesiness would get to him.

When I have DH take me to shows, I have him take me to things he'd like rather than considering my own taste...and it stinks.I just don't want to watch him be miserable. For xmas I had him take me to see Jersey Boys- I wasn't that into it but I figured he'd like it. He wasn't even that impressed! I finally got to see the show I was dying to see- Sunday in the Park with George. He would have been bored to tears over that one. But OMG it was the most amazing thing I've ever seen in a theater. Btw, I wouldn't recommend that show for your DH - it's not for everybody - and it'll be closed by the time you want tix anyway.

Hey- why not Jersey Boys? It's a fun show and everyone loves it! I'm just a snob so it wasn't for me...but the music is awesome and the performers are fantastic!!! And yes, front mezzanine seats are your best bet! Especially for a show with so much to 'see' as far as spectacle- you wouldn't want to be too close up.

Yesi, we saw Phantom 2 rows back and it was incredible! And that is a show that you would think was better sitting further back since you would see the chandelier and the Phantom running around at the top of the stage (it was incredible at mezz level too). I say go for it, because sometimes it is hard to score tix when a show opens.

thanks everyone!!!!! I still haven't decided, lol. I might do as suggested and casually mention show etc

Oh and I loved Spamalot - it was hilarious!!!!! But since we don't do Bway very often, I'd rather get tix for a show neither of us have seen.

Last summer I purchased tickets for Mary Poppins before it opened. I bought tickets for a Tuesday in December. The tickets were great and we were able to see the show before all the reviews came out and made people want the tickets more.

I say go for it
