Any step-moms out there? (Sorry long)

Any step-moms out there? (Sorry long)

I need help with a situation. My SD is making her communion in April DH wants to have a huge party at our house for her following the mass.

The issue here is that when it's a combined event, meaning our family and her mother's side, it is super uncomfortable. I feel we should have our own party and let her mother do her own thing in an effort for everyone to be able to enjoy the celebration. In addition, a house party does not have a set end time, so it's not like I'm guaranteed 3 hours of weirdness and then Iits over.

His point is that we should all be together for the sake of SD but 1. She's not stupid. She knows the deal and I don't think she is comfortable when we are all together either and 2. I don't think its appropriate to be acting like a psuedo family when that's not the case at all. I don't think it's fair to be giving this kid an impression that in reality does not exist.

The second issue is who to invite. If she were my kid, I would invite my entire family and all of my friends. But in this case, if we do a combined party, I would never want to expose my family or my friends to that. We are very different people.

If we don't do a combined party, I don't want to invite my friends. My SD has always been weird to my friends and I don't see why I should invite my friends and make them feel obligated to give a kid a gift who is blatantly rude to them. My mother thinks I should invite everyone regardless because when I have my own kids, my SD shouldn't feel like she got the shaft.

I agree with that and I would never want her to feel like she was less important. I hate these situations with such a passion. It makes things so difficult that should normally be fun occasions.

So points to address:
1. Would you do a combined party or separate?
2. Who would you invite?

sorry this is long but it's definitely a bone of contention at home and I wanted to see if I'm being unreasonable.

as a parent of children who have step children we do joint parties for anything for the kids ...ex husband and his girlfriend were even at our wedding because it was a big deal to the kids....it is wierd and odd but at 7 she prob isnt aware of the whole deal just the tension...but its her communion and thats huge and she should be able to have all the important people around her....how would it work if you did two parties? would some people not be able to attend the church? Does her mother want to throw a party? could you do it outside of your home so there is a set time for it to end ? Does DH think its uncomfortable? sorry lots of questions lol.....I really want to help....its such a tough place to be in !! Step parents in my eyes are some of the strongest most giving people in the world.

Thanks for responding.

If we did two parties, ours would be way bigger b/c her mom has a very small family. Not everyone who is invited to the party will be invited to the church. I was thinking let her mom do her thing after the communion on the Saturday and then we could have a party for her on Sunday. I have no idea what her mom wants to do. DH definitely thinks its uncomfortable too but he thinks it's best for SD. Personally, I don't think she would care one way or another what we did. As far as an out of the house party goes, there are waaaay too many people (like 80-100) and it would cost a fortune.

Now how do you handle inviting people? Like who do you invite? Or who does your ex invite? How does it work?

my older son made communion last year and my little guy makes his in may,,,My ex and I both have large families lol...but we split the tab for doing it out of the house just to make everyone involved more comfy and we invite all of my exes family all of mine and friends of both even DH family ( they are in colorado and cant comebut we invite any way ) and my ex husbands long term Girl friends parents and brother. It is odd for us adults however my kids love it and it so far has proven to be wonderful for them...as the counsler we used for a long time said it dosent matter how odd it is for the adults the kids need to know expecially at huge times in their lives that every one can band together for them . It is hard sometimes and trust me there are days I want to kick my ex but the kids adore him so we do big events together .....

Hey K,
Obviously I'm not a step-mom, but I can imagine what a tricky situation this is.
Similar to what KellyBean said, is there any way you convince DH to have it out a place--to make it a little more neutral ground? And like you said, have a set end time.

hey there.. im not a stepmom.. and im not catholic either.. lol. but i do have a daughter from a previous relationship and will nad have faced that awkardness about separate parties or joint parties..

i definetly think that u should do it togehter for u'r SD's comfort.. i don't know much about communions but i do know about children feeling uncomfortable. and that you don't want.. i also think it should def be outside of the home.. start time and end times are CRUCIAL to these kinds of functions at least in the beginning..

good luck and congrats to your SD.

not a step-mom, not catholic and i don't even have any kids ....

BUT i would suggest maybe having your DH talk to his daughter and ask her what she would like.

she's like 9 or 10, right? (i'm clueless!)

i'd say she's old enough to have an opinion in this situation.

ask her what you just asked us ...

* would she want to have a combined party, or would she feel more comfortable having separate parties?

* would she prefer to have the party at home, or would she rather it in a restaurant?
