My husband and I are thinking of taking a vacation there this year. We are trying to keep the vacation costs down and decided to go somewhere we can drive to. I know Acadia National Park is there (we like hiking trips) and you can also go over to Nova Scotia via ferry. If anyone knows the area, can you give some recommendations and tips? Thanks

Eat dinner early!
Hubby and I went to Camden Maine a few years ago, and he was dumbfounded to find out that the restaurants were closing their kitchens at around 8:00 - 8:30. When we arrived Friday night we were trying to find a place for dinner and the best we could do was find a bar that had a small bar menu with chowder and chicken fingers. I had suggested that we should stop at the Dunkin Donuts to stock up in case we found nothing open (no 24-hr. 7-11's up there) - he said we could stop later if need be and did not believe me when I told him it would not be open 24 hours like in NY. I was right - when we passed by again at 9:30 they were closed!
So that's my advice, don't assume you'll be able to eat whenever you're hungry!

Anyone been to Bar Harbor in Maine?
If you like hiking and the outdoors - Maine is a great place to go.
However, aside from nature, there isn't much to do there except eat lobster :)

Anyone been to Bar Harbor in Maine?
My husband and I went camping in Acadia National Park this summer for our one yr. anniversary. We took our travel trailer and stayed right in the park. There were some amazing hikes as well as trails to bike on. We brought our mountain bikes with us, but there are lots of places in town to rent them. Be prepared for a long drive. It`s about 10 hours away, but very beautiful. We ate at a great restaurant (Parkside) in Bar Harbour. I know you need to make reservations early if you want to stay in the park. We booked in April for August. We met a couple that went without reservations, but they had to stay about 15 mins. outside town at a B&B.
We did not take the ferry trip to Novia Scotia because we did not have much time. It was very expensive to take the car on the ferry, and there is not much to do without a car at the point where you are dropped off. Have fun if you do go, and try to do some stargazing.

was beautiful. Great for hiking,
biking, and outdoorsy stuff.
We stayed at a B&B called the
Holbrook House in bar harbour which
was wonderful. I can't say enough
about it.

We have been to Bar Harbor twice in the last 6 years and we loved it. Acadia is a beautiful park and it takes a least 2-3 days to explore it all fully. I absolutely suggest going to the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia for the sunset. It is incomparable! And if you want to get up early you can always watch the sunrise there too (the earliest place the sun rises in the United States). The town of Bar Harbor itself is quaint and has lots and lots of little shops to explore. And I would suggest taking a trip to Nova Scotia if you have the time. You can take the Cat(hight speed ferry) and be there in a couple of hours. I would suggest if you are going you also might want to stop in Freeport Maine on your way to Bar Harbor and go to THE LL Bean store. It is open 24 hours a day every day. There aren't even locks on the doors!! Freeport is also one of the originators of factory outlet stores and they have some of the best there.
As for places to stay we tend to go for those that are less expensive because we don't spend a lot of time in the room. We stayed at the Bar Harbor Motel (I think that was the name). It is clean, not too expensive and well taken care of. Any other questions feel free to ask.
