Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
I've been to Thailand -- most amazing experience of my life!!!! I would be a little concerned about everything going on there right now but they are extremely good to tourists so I'm sure if they stay out of the protest areas they should be okay. We were in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket (it's actually pronounced poo-ket). We spent about 6 days in each and 2 days traveling (flight was 25 hours which was pretty rough). We found the Frommer's guide very helpful. In Bangkok, the top places to visit were the temples and the floating market (we felt that 6 days there was much more than you needed.... 3-4 would have been totally sufficient). In Chiang Mai we went elephant riding (we took a mahout training course which I would highly recommend rather than the touristy rides that most people do), 2 day trekking in the jungle (not for the faint at heart), and visited the old city. In Phuket, we mostly just relaxed and enjoyed the beaches (more beautiful than any I have ever seen in the Bahamas, Caribbean, Greece, or Hawaii) and took a tour of the surrounding islands. Again, I would highly recommend the trip if your friend is adventurous and willing to travel half way around the world. Once you get there, everything including 5 star resorts and restaurants are ridiculously affordable. Feel free to FM me if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
I've been twice. Once on my honeymoon to Bangkok and Khao Lak. The second time to Krabi.
Bangkok is an amazing place. Frenetic, crowded, hot and certainly not to everyones taste. I love it.
I'd recommend Krabi or Khao Lak for the beachy part of their trip. Both places are beautiful and a lot quieter then Phuket (poo-ket).
The Sarojin is an incredible hotel and I highly recommend the pool villas. Tha Sarojin - Khao Lak
We stayed at The Amari Vogue in Krabi. Great hotel and a bit cheaper then The Sarojin. The top floor honeymoon suites are fantastic and have amazing views of the Hong Islands. Amari Vogue - Krabi
If they happen to get to Krabi there is a fantastic tour company run by this wonderful couple Elizabeth and Sun. Take a few long tail boat trips with them. Fairly cheap and Sun's cooking is amazing. Andaman Camp and Cruise

Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
My sister just got back from living in Hong Kong for 4 months and did side trips all over Asia. A girl I work with is going to Hong Kong and asked her for ideas for short trips. This is straight from her email today:
Lots of people fly to Thailand for the long weekend as well. Deal is usually you have stop in Bangkok. Most head to the beach in Phuket which is an area made up of a lot of towns. Don’t stay in Patong it is discussing, but Kara is nice and some other areas as well.
Then my all time favorite but definitely need a long weekend is Phi Phi which is an island off of Phuket you need to take a ferry there.
Bangkok is very cool to as a city destination. Not what I expected at all. Lots of cool sightseeing temples, palace etc. And some good cool hip nightlife and dining, easy city to get around to good public transportation… and easy to get a direct flight.

Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
Yeah i went to Phuket Island and was there for 5 days as part of our honeymoon trip. I didnt think it was so great, Maybe because I went to Bali, off the coast of Indonesia which was indescribably amazing and had beacher 10x better the Phuket Island. In addition at night, there is a lot of prostitution that was visibly going on. There is a little center in the heart of Phuket Island, around restaraunts, where they literally had underage girls prancing around in bars, with huge amts of tourists (men) drinking with them, and so forth..not soo honeymoonish. Not sure if that still goes on? this was 2 years ago...But be prepared to see LOTS of 'massage parlors' that cater to sexual needs of tourists
People do go to Thailand for their honeymoon. But I would say PERSONALLY there are nicer island out there. Just my opnion!
I went to Phuket Island, but maybe in the other areas this is not prevalent...

Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
hi girls! im gina's friend...
my mom has time shares and gifted them to us for our honeymoon so we are locked into doing two weeks. i could have done one week but I didn't think flying that far it was worth it. We are staying at the Marriott Vacation Club in Phuket. According to Marriott it is there highest ranked timeshare place in the world. I was a little skeptical but FH is obsessed with getting over to that part of the world. My only concern is the length of time we will be there if we will start to get bored. My FH can only handle a beach for a few days. I only the other hand can sit on one everyday of my life.... Any suggestions on restaurants (we are foodies and love good food!) or tours or activities that are a must?
My idea is to fly to Bangkok for a couple of days during the two weeks and spend two nights or three nights there... anyone any suggestions as to where to stay?
I will always stay at a name place when I travel overseas so...
thanks in advance...

All the tours usally are in the morning and the Marriott front desk, and every other hotel will usually have pamphlets to let you know. I went on a tour to Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island) which is where they shot one of the Bond movies, its literally a tiny island in the middle of no where, very scenic! make sure u have a GREAT camera. Also there are nice tours to Phi Phi Islands, where you can swim and stuff...

Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
Thailand is a hugely popular tourist destination. It introduces you to South East Asia without being too in your face. Alot of people speak english and it's pretty easy to get around using buses and trains. Plus its affordable, the only expensive thing is the plane ticket and the long plane ride. We did 17 hours Non stop on Thai Airways. Awesome airline, they treat you like royalty in coach!
I visited: bangkok - (central Thailand) the capital of Thailand. it's a big bustling city. good for sightseeing and shopping. Visited the floating market, Grand Palace etc..
Chaing Mai - (North Thailand) its a mountainous region. mostly you go there to relax and do sightseeing. it's a waay slower pace than bangkok. We rode elephants, did a thai cooking class and visited a few temples.
Phuket - (south) This is where the beaches are. I visited the beach where the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio 'The Beach' was filmed. It's beautiful. Perfect place for honeymooning. Visited Monkey Beach & Phi Phi Islands. Here's a website of a resort in Phuket to give you an idea of what's there www.trisara.com
Food is cheap. Nice hotel rooms are less than $100 a night. Awesome villas and facier hotels are pricier but still affordable
Anyways thats just a general rundown on Thailand. I did alot of research before going using www.tripadvisor.com

In Bangkok I stayed at Siam@Siam Hotel & Spa...modern hotel with pool on the 15th floor with awesome views of Bangkok. Here is the website: http://www.siamatsiam.com/
It's Central to most everything and you can walk to various places like the MBK shopping Mall.

Re: anyone ever been to thailand?
I stayed at the Lebua at State Tower Hotel in Bangkok and it was super fantastic! We had a balcony room with amazing view of the city , the room was a suite with a living room and bedroom area, the service was 5 stars, delicious breakfast buffet, convenient location near transportation. On the top floor there is the sickest bar you can imagine overlooking the whole city in all directions. And best part is I booked through Expedia for like $120 a night. Good luck!
