anyone ever go to the Outer Banks?

I'm trying to plan our summer vacation, and I've always wanted to visit the Outer Banks - from what I've seen, the scenery looks gorgeous! (Remember the movie Message In a Bottle? Horrible movie but beautiful views!)
I don't know too much about the area though - is there much to do around? We're looking for some relaxation - beach/pool, or outdoor activities, and quiet evenings. Do you usually rent someone's summer home, or are there many hotels nearby?

Any feedback would be helpful.

My parents rented a house there a few years ago. It was right on the beach, no a/c, slept about 10 people, and not in bad shape. They said it was pretty cheap, not sure of the total amount. They loved it down there. Im sure that there are websites where you can go an check out different houses. I will try and find out where they stayed exactly and if they have any info if you want.

I've been there! My friend and I went in early October 2001. It was off season so kinda quiet, but still some tourists around. The bars and restaurants were pretty empty when we were there. It's really beatiful there, and I can imagine it being a wonderful place to visit in the summer. It does seem like a place where mostly families go and rent houses, so I'm sure there will be lots of kids.
