Anyone in a strange living situation right now? (long)

I've made the big move over to London to be with DH, and I have no job yet. Financially, we're not in the best situation, so we're living with a friend (paying minimal rent) until we can get some money together for a down payment on an apartment or house. The guy with live with is very large and very loud!!! He's a great guy, but a heavy drinker and confirmed bachelor.

The house we're living in is pretty big--5 bedrooms, living room, two bathrooms, kitchen & dining room, convenient to public transportation, etc. But, it's just not ours I hate the fact that there's NO dining table--that's right we all watch TV while we eat! (a situation we're trying to rectify). We're not able to use any of our gifts from the wedding because we're afraid they'll get all mixed up in the stuff that's already there. I can't decorate or anything...

I just can't wait till we can get our own place. I guess I really need to get cranking on these cover letters!!

Anyone else in a similar situation?

same situation except it's with the in-laws. We live in a 14 x 17 room...I don't cook cuz his mother stands there and watches me trying to 'learn' what I'm doing and smoking. The laundry is in our room, so she's in and out on various nights. Most of my stuff is packed from my apt. and we have so much clothing it sits in piles on our chairs and in baskets!!! We are saving for a house and have a goal of getting out by Sept.

I will be in a strange living situation as of June 1st. The ILs have agreed to let us move into their basement rent free so we can save $ for a house... Me and my MIL do not get along, so we will see how it goes. She was very snutty and stressed me out more than anyone during the planning of our wedding.. Made a lot of demands on us as to what we were supposed to do, and has already made comments about how her grandchildren must be bar/bat mitzvahed.... I am catholic, doug is jewish... Before we were even engaged, we agreed to me raising the children catholic... I can just anticipate many arguments in the future...
I know its going to be difficult to live there, but in the overall picture I would rather save money so we can move on and buy a house of our own.

Can't say I understand because we live in our own house and have always had our own apartment but it will get better.

Was your DH living there before you moved to London? Maybe you could look for a small apt even a studio. It may not be ideal but at least it would be yours.

Is this guy drinking in the house and having parties all the time? Hopefully it isn't encouraging you DH to be a big drinker as well. The weather should be getting better there now you guys can start doing stuff at night outside so you are spending less time in the house. And you will find work soon!

Well, I am living in my own house, but it is not the way I wanted to get it. Both my Mom and Dad have passed away, and I am trying to clean it out, and my sister is not helping me, so on top of living in the house I grew up in, have to still empty out there bedroom, etc. It is like moving into my own house and I did not even leave. So we are living half upstairs and half downstairs. Our bedroom is the spare master bedroom and it is cluttered and not the way I want it, but it is so hard to have to clean out. I already got the living room, kitchen, and dining room emptied to the point where I can re decorate soon, we are trying to recoperate from the wedding, and then we will be working on the bedrooms in the summer, after our official honeymoon.

princess99....that must be SO hard for you! There are so many emotions involved as well as the stress of owning and re-decorating!!

We are living in my mom's basement because my stepfather has pancreatc cancer and they asked us to move in. They are only charging us $500 so we are saving money for a house.
It has a kitchen ,living room, small bedroom and bathroom. I can't wait to we have enough for a house. The washer and dryer are in the basement. For privacy I asked my mom to leave the laundry at the top of the stairs and I do it for her. She sometimes wants to come downstairs ..I think to check on how I am keeping the house. She is compulsively clean and freaks out if there are any dishes in the sink. So far it is working out.

my dh and i live with my mom and stepfather we have two rooms upstairs but share the kitchen and bathrooms. i also have all my shower stuff stacked up to the ceiling in one of the rooms just waiting to be used lol. but with the prices of houses on long island this was the only way we would have be able to save so hopefully we will be out of here by december.

We are in our own apartment now but we will be moving into my Mother's next week, but we are just waiting to go to closing on our house. So hopefully we will be in by the summer. It will be weird to be in my old bedroom with my Hubby and a cat.

We live with my in laws... we come in their front door, share the bathroom... we have about 3/4 of the basement made into a very nice apartment (livingroom, kitchen & bedroom). Plenty of room for me him & the cat.... yet itcan still be uncomfortable. They can here if we have a fight and friends & my family sometimes feel funny coming over '...because we don't want to bother them.' When we built it, we could not afford the money to put in a bathroom or a separate outside entrance. But it is free.... so them wanting to chat before I even get a chance to get out of my suit as soon as I come home is worth it! Another 1 - 1 1/2 years to go!! Then my own home!!

if you can believe it in the almost 2 years since we've been married...we are finally settling down in our 5th place together!!!


not to mention 4 places before that!!!!!
i hate moving

JENHOS, he's not having parties all the time, and actually, he mostly stays in his bedroom, but we know he's drinking way too much. He's a big guy and the alcohol doesn't help his physical situation. Plus, I think he gets depressed and then drinks more. I think he also feels left out since I moved in because DH used to live there before I moved over and they would do things together...I guess it must be hard for him too.

I guess it's just an inconvenience to have someone else around all of the time. He asks questions about where we've been, trying to be nice of course, but it just gets annoying. We have to watch what we say around him, because people (mutual friends) don't invite him along sometimes because he does drink too much and then he is very boisterous and very annoying--for example, DH received an invite for us to attend an all-day wine tasting last Saturday. It was hosted by the Wine and Food Academy that Bruce introduced DH to. When we came home, he asked where we had been, we told him and he was all pissed off because he hadn't been invited.

Just things like that. But, thanks everyone for sharing your stories--I guess it could be worse, we could be living with MIL!!!

I live in our brand new house by 'myself'in Florida. Dh has lived here about 3 days total and we moved in April 2nd.

So, pretty much I have a house and no husband right now!

Sorry your overseas! Atleast you get to buy some awesome Lush products!

Yep.
I live in a room with my In-laws who speak Chinese.

We dont even have a coffee table to eat off of. We eat off the corner of the dresser. One of us on the bed one of us on a chair.

It's rough.

I never leave the room because she stares at me (his grandmother) she's nice but its awkward.

Saving our butts off too. Been here since May 2, 2003 and looks like we won't move out until Feb of 2005.

BTW...as if complaining about the living situation wasn't bad enough yesterday, last night I went into the kitchen, switched on the light and there was a mouse running across the sink!!!!!! I thought I left all of that behind in Manhattan!!!
