Anyone in the process of buying a house now or recently???

Original post by angNbrian07

DH and I are definitely going to be buying a house soon... if not now then in the first half of 08.

We have been looking for almost a year and have not been that impressed with what is out there.

Then we found it... THE ONE (we think) but it is a bit expensive. It just seems like even though the market is soft, the houses are still alot of money for a young couple to afford.

Just wondering if anyone else was going through the same thing.

We are looking in Hauppauge/Smithtown area to be close to my parents and cuz the taxes are lower.

Am I just crazy or is $500k a LOT for a home?

We have 4 bedrooms, all wiht walk in closets, 1.5 baths, we are putting in another bath next year, a formal living room, formal dining room, game room with a wet bar and they left the pool table , home office, full size laundry room, family room, workshop, pantry/storage room, utilities room, and a wine cellar.....

Umm yeah, and our taxes are $3,129 a year

your house is SO charming!!! I love it!!!! I really wish we would've moved a little further away. we bought a house 2 years ago while the market was still RED HOT and we paid 575K for a 3 bedroom house that was in good shape but just needed updating (kitchens, baths etc.).....we've put around 50k into the house so far, and we're not done!! we need to do the roof and a few other things around here. it's sooooooo depressing to read the open house listings in my area (Howard Beach) now b/c I'm seeing listings in the 625K range for houses that are in much better condition (these are houses that would have easily been in the 700K+ range when we were looking). we bought when we did b/c we were convinced the prices would still go up,when in fact they've went down! but I guess you just never know w/ real estate!!! can I come live with you fullersbride???? I'm so tired of doing work on my house!!

Yeah, But ALL houses need work. It's a never ending project. We want to put in another bath. Retile some floors put in central air and the list goes on. I feel that if you are fortunate enough to be able to own your own home, enjoy it, it may not be your dream home (we hope to build one in a few years) but you have a home, not many are as fortunate!!

We recently bought a house, in July actually. We were looking in Long ISland but everything was so expensive or needed a lot of work that we had to relocate. So we moved to CT, 2 hours away and bought a beautiful 4 story 3,500 sq ft old victorian mansion on an acre of land for $280,000 It was SOooooooo WORTH THE MOVE!!!

You have the most gorgeous house! I absolutey adore it! Congrats - and enjoy!!

And NYC firemen too

We have friends in CT and they have beautiful homes and paid so much less than they would for a similar house in NY, and their taxes are reasonable as well! If DH could live there, we'd probably be up there as well!

Amen Sista !!! We've been renovating our house for 2 years now and it feels like it'll never end ! I always think about the fact that we bought at a higher price too. But the interest rates were lower at the time so that helps even things out a bit. Also, I just kept telling myself we bought our house when the time was right for us to buy a house !! It's always easy to say 'I should've waited' but who knows...if we waited the prices might not have gone down !?!? 20/20 hindsight is always so clear.

very true!!!! thanks for stopping me from kicking myself yet again when I see the local real estate listings this weekend!! and at least we were a little more settled before the wedding b/c we had the house for a while. congrats on being a fellow homeowner! and for getting through renovations! I read once that a couple who can survive renovating together can handle anything! I guess it was a good test before we got married!

Congrats to you too ! I try to think about the fact that we'll always have equity in our house and it's a good investment no matter what. Unless you plan on selling in a year or two you'll be fine in the long run !!

But I tell ya, our next house will NOT be a fixer upper

You're so right about being settled too.....we fought so much during the first few months of renovations that now things are so calm and smooth. It's nice !! We wanted to buy a house first then get married so hopefully the hard part is behind us !! But I tell ya, our next house will NOT be a fixer upper

OMG us too!!!!! DH is really handy (he's an electrician) and even all this work was too much for HIM!! lol not only does he want everything done in our next house- he wants all the furniture included too!!! he really hated every aspect of moving! well at least we'll be here for a while!
