Suspected bank robber Jacquelyn Jane King, 60, of Midland is escorted by a Midland County sheriffs deputy into her arraignment at the Midland County Courthouse Wednesday.

Tears streamed down Jacquelyn Jane King's face as she was arraigned on three counts of bank robbery and her bond was set at $1 million Wednesday.

King, 60, was arrested Monday hours after the robbery of the Chemical Bank branch at 3400 Isabella St. She is charged in connection with that robbery, as well as heists on Dec. 6 at Comerica Bank, 401 S. Saginaw Road, and Dec. 20 at the Members First Credit Union, 600 W. Wackerly St. The suspect threatened to detonate a bomb during the first robbery, and no weapons were seen at the other two robberies.

King wasn't expecting the media attention drawn by the case, trying to turn away from news cameras when she was brought into the courtroom.

'Please, why are there photographers?' the handcuffed King asked as two deputies led her to a seat. Once seated, she turned her chair to face a wall in the courtroom.

During the hearing, King requested a court-appointed attorney and told Midland County District Court Judge Stephen Carras that her money comes from a small pension from the city and that she is supported by her ex-husband. She still lives with him at an Adams Drive home.

Midland County Prosecutor Mike Carpenter asked for a high bond, citing the seriousness of the offenses and saying that King is a flight risk.

'It was to the extent that the individuals handing over the money were scared for their safety,' Carpenter said. 'We believe that she does pose a significant danger to the community.'

Carras said King will have a court-appointed attorney, and a preliminary hearing will be scheduled within 14 days.

After the hearing, Carpenter explained why officials have been mum of details.

'We want to make sure justice is served as well as her trial rights protected,' he said. He added the high bond is appropriate considering the circumstances, and is based upon them rather than King's physical size — 5 feet 1 inch tall — or age.

He said she worked at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library at one point.

Paula Whittington, assistant city manager of human resources, said King worked as a part time clerk/typist at the library from July 1985 to August 1988, then moved to a full time library assistant position until October 1999. In that month, King voluntarily resigned. King's pension is paid by the Municipal Employees Retirement System, Whittington said.

In 1999, King was charged with forgery, uttering and publishing and larceny in a building. A check of that case file in the Midland County Circuit Court showed the City of Midland as the victim and that restitution of $702 was paid.

Carpenter said he expects to receive a call from federal prosecutors. He is not sure if they will want to press federal charges in connection with the bank robberies, and that the determinations are made on a case-by-case basis.

King's family members had no comment.

King is scheduled to attend a preliminary hearing on Jan. 14 before Midland County District Court Judge John H. Hart. Daniel Duke has been assigned as her court-appointed attorney.
