are crockpots safe to use?

are crockpots safe to use?

I know this sounds stupid but I worry they're not safe.... I worry about fire hazards - being that they're plugged in all day while we're working.... and I worry about health hazards - meat / poultry sitting all day (when it's raw, and when it's cooked too).....

I really would like to buy one and use it, they sound so convenient after a long day, and all you ladies have awesome recipes, but I can't get over the fear :(

My crockpot automatically turns off when it's finished cooking, so yes it is safe.

a lot of people are nervous and won't use it for that reason. I personally (knocking on wood) have never had a problem with mine but I am nervous using it. There's a lot of recalls on crockpots so that's what I'm nervous about. However, a lot of people I know, and myself, have a crockpot and use it and have never had a problem but I can't say it's 100% safe

yea it makes me nervous too- I try not to use it when I am not home- but if I do, I try and use recipes that have a lot of liquid so that they dont burn up and cause problems, and I also put them in an outlet that has one of those circuit trips- so that if it starts to burn, it just turns it off

eta- mine has a warming function and it stays on till I get home. I set it at 8am and dh shuts it off at 530 ish when he gets home

I personally do not think that something that is plugged in and on for hours on end is not safe. Anything can go wrong...an electrical outage or spark, spilled liquid which then creates an electrical fire, burning of food and so many other things I can think of! I would personally never leave anythign on when I'm out...I know many people who do though. I'd use one if I were home though, so that I could monitor it.

I think it is ok because it isnt an open flame. We keep alot of things plugged in all day, some things are switched to off but if you think about it there are so many areas for electrical fires! I always worry about my laptop actually because it causes alot of static!

Anyway - back to crock pots, we use our alot and so far so good!

I use mine all the time and have never had a problem, so Im going to go with yes, they are safe.

When Im out for the day we always put it on a low setting

I agree with your concerns. I won't use it unless I know I will be home all day, especially knowing that my dogs are home alone all day and I can't risk it!

nothing electronic is safe. i am the same as you and would never leave it on when i am not home. i am too scared. it is so sad but i am too afraid that it would start a fire and my dog would be locked in the house. i know i know. i usually will make stuff on the weekend when one of us is home. i know it is not the safest but i use it the most overnight, at least thinking i would hear the smoke alarm go off worse case scenario.

Re: are crockpots safe to use?

a know a handful of people that feel this way & i can kinda see their point - especially that my house burned down when i was younger, so i do not take fire hazards lightly - BUT.. the way i feel, is that it was made to be plugged in all day. It's not like an iron or another appliance that is meant to be unplugged & not left alone u know? also -like jenna said - it is not an open flame...i just make sure it is pulled away from everything... as for the food - it slow cooks, so it's not left out sitting raw all day..it is constantly cooking...and more modern crockpots (atleast the one i have) automatically switches to warm when it's done. i love my crockpot!

Good point! This was my worry about getting one and leaving it on while at work! I will use it now with LESS worry!! TY!

I think they are pretty safe if it's less than 8 hours on low or 6 hours on high. Like a previous poster said-it's not an open flame. I won't use a slow cooker when I go to work because I am out of the house for 10 hours. I worry that that is too many hours even with a warming feature so I usually use the slow cooker on a Sunday afternoon when I'm home most of the day.

Crockpots aren't like irons so it's okay to keep them on. Mine shuts off when it's done. You just set the timer and it will shut off. Even though it's plugged in, it's like leaving a lamp plugged in that's shut off.

I've made a few stews with mine and the meat ways always cooked. I am afraid of fire hazards so I only use it when I'm home. If I have to step out for a few minutes I will keep it on low. But just for me, I wouldn't leave it on while no one is home even though they say in the paperwork its safe.
