DH works for an airline and he works the overnight shift. He currently works 4 nights and has 3 nights off. Awhile back, the bosses had announced that if the employees called out sick or for personal reasons without giving any notice more than 3 times within I think a year (which is completely NOT okay - everyone I know is sick more than 3 times during a year ) that they would change that employee's schedule to working 5 nights and having 2 off. I think this is completely illegal but this airline clearly does whatever they want however they want.
Anyway, DH had already been out twice so we knew the next time he called out sick, his schedule would change. Well, he was sick last night. I am sure when he goes to work tonight, they will tell him that starting next week or something, his new schedule will be X. I barely see him as it is! Plus, you KNOW they aren't going to let his 2 days off be the weekend! They are prob gonna be like a Tues/Wed or some crap! UCK! The ONLY slight good thing is that he'd be going into work later, so I'd get to see him at night for a little when I got home from work.
Sorry girls, just needed to vent. I really hate the company he works for.

That really *****. I mean, I guess it's good that you may see him before he goes into work, but that's just not enough sometimes.
Can he switch airlines???? It sounds to me like they are just jerks!
So sorry hun

wow. I didn't even know people could do this. Only 3 sick days a YEAR???? And no personal time off either? What is that? What if a family emergency came up, or he wanted to take a short vacation? That's just ridiculous. I hate it when people think that others' lives just revolve around their job. Obviously they have a family too and that should ALWAYS come first. This world and our values are so screwed up.
Sorry you guys have to deal with this

How is that even legal?? What is he a child? He needs to be punished for being legitimately sick?

I'm sorry- hopefully they will give him another chance- its a very stupid rule- you certainly cant control if you get sick and three times is not much!

Hopefully they won't hold it against him and he won't have to work 5 nights. I'm sorry that this is happening

That doesn't sound right that it's only 3 sick days. I know with DH's job they can only have so many sick incidents in a certain time frame.

Nothing really ever happened. He submitted the letter he wrote to all the bosses and he gets looks that would kill him if they could from the one guy who he sorta bashed in the letter - well, not bashed but he did express his disappointment with him. They never had a meeting with him, tho. They claimed they were waiting in the office the morning of April 9, when DH and I were on our way upstate! They sent him a text message asking where he was. Meanwhile, the letter clearly stated he'd meet w/ them the morning of April 8th, not 9th! And the morning of the 8th, THEY never showed. UCK!

SUPPOSEDLY they are doing this to try and eliminate the amount of guys who call in 'sick' like the 1st or last day of their weekly shift, you know, so they get a 4 day weekend instead of 3, if that makes sense? Now, don't get me wrong, DH has done this before, also, but this new rule isn't going to stop them from doing this! They will still do it, only now it'll be a 3-day weekend instead of 4! They are so stupid!

I'm sorry to hear that, I understand how frustrating it gets, it works the same way with the NYPD. I used to be a cop with the dept for 2 yrs and the working schedule was always like that where you get two of the weekdays off usually either a Mon/Tue or Tue/Wed. Weekends and holidays- they own you. It's only when you get placed into a squad- rotating schedule where you work 5 days with 2 days off and the next week would be 5 days with 3 days off. My husband is currently with the dept and his schedule is always changing as well. It was Fri & Sat off but now he gets Sun's & Mon's off. However, since uniform members are departmental needs, you're pretty much on call when the dept needs you. and you have to go in on your days off. And this is a city job so imagine how private companies are going to direct their staff. Private companies like the airlines work pretty much the same in the retrospect that when they need a body, they'll do whatever they have to do to get someone to cover and work. They can do whatever they want since it's not city-regulated and it's all private funding. Just make sure the health insurance covers everything. Other than that, there's really not much that can be done since it is a private company.
