I will be commuting to NYC-- I work outside the Lincoln Tunnel so the bus is the best route for me- goes right into Port Authority---
there is a train that goes into hoboken that many peolpe take the path into downtown--
as for me I will probably drive half the way with my husband and then take the bus from where we live now (20 minute bus ride compared to 1 hour and half from new house)
after a few years there will be a train directly to manhattan(penn station)
passaic county is much more affordable then bergen because bergen county is a better commute
hope that helps
are you interested in NJ? I grew up on li and moved here since my husband works here so i have learned alot in the past few years

Hi Laura
We are starting to think about getting off LI. Right now we have a 1 bedroom co-op in Little Neck. The commute is great - 25 to 40 min on the LIRR. The price of a house in the area is way out of our reach so I am finally starting to come around to the idea that if we really want a house:
1. I will have a longer commute and
2. We will probably need to be off LI because of the tax situation.
So we are starting to think about NJ.
I am curious, did you find taxes more bearable in NJ neighborhoods?

as for the commuting I realized that as well and have more than doubled my nice 25-35 minute commute--
as for taxes -- it depends on the area-- we knew what we wanted to spend total for a mortgage/tax payment each month and we are under it--surprised completely--our taxes are $520 for 1/2 acre which i have been told is good--but again nothing to really compare it to although we did see other houses in the high 6's and up--
hope that helps

Just to add a bit of info to Laura's... When I had been researching the tax situation on LI vs NJ I found that the areas within about 45 minutes of Manhattan were about the same tax range, or just slightly less, however you could find a bit more house for the money. When you went further west, then you could find some better deals on both housing cost and taxes. This was based on research on Realtor.com - unfortunately, it's not too encouraging in terms of a financial advantage - but nice that you can get more property and a slightly bigger house in NJ over LI.

I just bought a house in No. Westchester...it is a 45 min commute to manhattan. And the taxes are less and you get more land

Thanks for the info
We are probably going to wait until spring and then explore beyond the 5 mile range from our current location - HaHA.
MSCJKL we have started to think about Westchester as well. We ski all winter so going a little further north sounds better than further east on the island. Are you north of White Plains?
