B-day Blues

B-day Blues

I'm feeling absolutely miserable. It's my b-day this weekend and I'm feeling terrible that my DH, friends and family haven't thought to do anything special for me. I've always gotten extra sensitive about my b-day (although I have no idea why) .

I spend so much time trying to make everyone else's birthday, shower, graduation, (fill in the occasion) special - buying special gifts, being there for them and I don't feel like anyone wants to do something nice for me!!!

I asked DH to have a BBQ for me and he ignored me totally. What should I do? Am I being rediculous? I've been miserable to DH for the past week - all weepy and grumpy. Now he's trying to do things for me but in my opinion it's not the same if it's only because I was upset about it.

Help!!! I just want to get past this, move on to my normal life and stop being so miserable about it.

Re: B-day Blues

is it a 'milestone' bday that is making you sad?
or are you just sad that no one is celebrating?
why dont you call up a few girlfriends and you can all go out to dinner forget the boys!

Happy Birthday!

Re: B-day Blues

Tell your DH that you would like to do something special for your bday. Maybe you two can go out to a really nice restaurant or you can have the family over for a little gtg.

Re: B-day Blues

I know exactly how you are feeling. Today is my 30th b-day..it is just an ordinary day. Nothing special is going on..I am probably just going over my mom's to have cake, I am working, it is Monday...

Maybe they are planning something special for you and you don't know it...

Then it will be a big surprise...

Happy Birthday from a fellow May baby...

Re: B-day Blues

It's not a milestone b-day or anything. I know I sound super selfish but I'm really not. Quite the contrary, I'm always trying to plan something great to celebrate for others - and will always try my best to be there no matter when or where their party is. We throw beautiful dinner parties for family and friends all the time. They all tell us how special it makes them feel.

I guess that's why I feel bad that they haven't planned something to celebrate for me. I asked DH to plan a gtg weeks ago and nothing!! Even if they planned something now, everyone's too busy -it's a very bad time of year to try to get people together, especially at the last minute.

Thanks for listening to me vent.

Happy Birthday to all the birthday s.

You never know what someone has planned so don't rush to judgement too fast.

ONce a friend of mine was so bummed that he had never had a surprise party, and the day after he said that to me, there was a huge surprise party for him...

even if its dinner with family and friends, it will be special for you !

Re: B-day Blues

Thanks..I looked on the internet for gifts for turning 30 and the website OLD GEEZER.COM popped up on the search engine and had stuff for 30 year olds. Now that made me depressed!

HAVE A GREAT BIRTHDAY THIS WEEKEND!!

Teresa - I dont think its silly at all! Your birthday is the one day out of the year that you get to celebrate your life...and I dont blame you a bit for asking people to make a big deal of it.

Maybe they are planning something and trying to keep it under wraps?

If not, I would sit your hubby down and tell you expect something special on your birthday...period!

Re: B-day Blues

I am also someone who takes my birthday very seriously, but not everyone feels the same way about birthdays.
I know I can always expect nice and thoughtful gifts from close friends and family, but as far as planning something special, why wait for someone to do it FOR you?? I do it for MYSELF!
I usually pick a restaurant I want to go to, then call my parents, brother and sister and tell them 'Here's where we are going to dinner for my birthday, on X day at x time.' I always intend to pay the bill myself (afterall, I did the inviting), but my dad always pays anyway.
SO, if you're sure nothing is planned (and don't underestimate the chances of a surprise!), plan for yourself, and enjoy!

Happy early birthday!!

Re: B-day Blues

DH seems to be a bit more sensitive to the situation now. I think he finally woke up to the fact that this is important to me.

Thanks to everyone for the b-day wishes, listening to me vent and for your advice.

Girl, I threw my own party and invited everyone. it was good, don't mope around, don't place expectations on others, the way you operate is not the way everyone else does, it would be nice to think that way.

Take charge of your need to celebrate your b-day or any other holiday, and do whatever you want that day- call up friends, buy yourself something or make a date with your husband-but don't wait for someone else to plan your day. Only you can make yourself happy.

Re: B-day Blues

I don't like being the center of attention...so I like low key b-days...we were at MIL's house and I told DH not to tell her it was my b-day (she wasn't MIL then)

things just change..I used to be really into people's b-days...but when they tapered off (sending me a christmas card that said..btw happy b-day)...i follwed their lead...

but I think its different strokes for different folks...at the very least DH and you should go out to a nice dinner
