what are all of you doing or planning on doing when you have a baby?
i don't want to have to go back to work only 3 months after having a baby. i feel that is not nearly enough time and besides we don't have anyone to watch our baby once i go back to work (all parents still work and i don't know if i could put an infant into daycare.)
but my income is important AND more importnatly our health insurance is from my job. i'm turning 30 this year and we want to start a family, but how?
anyone else have a similar issue or any advice?

Re: baby ? (poll)
Well, we really dont have anyone that could watch our baby either...so I would like to be able to take at least 1 year off before using daycare.

It's a really hard decision.. Luckily my mom is there to help- she had me young and is only 47 so she can help... She is still a stay at home mom with my younger brother so I am VERY lucky!! I absolutely would have to return to work right away so I really don't have a choice. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to survive off of only 1 salary for us- especially being that is is from the good old NYPD!

i also would never be able to survive on an nypd salary alone so i too have to go back to work but i think we are going to work different schedules for a while and see if that can work if not we will have to use day care. my mom helped with my sisters children and she is getting older and just doesnt have the patience that she use to and just spoils them lol

Re: baby ? (poll)
I KNOW I will lose my job if I dont take a short maternity leave (I dont have tenure). I have a son whos 4 1/2 and we dont want to wait any longer so unfortunatelly I will be taking a very short maternity leave and my mom is quitting her job and I will pay her what I pay Gabes daycare $700/month (great price) At least that way shell still make some $$ and Ill feel so much better about going back to work. I personally could NOT leave a baby in daycare. I dont like it now even with a 4 year old. Im just nervous and then I cant work well.

There are many options -- though no perfect solutions.
Some couples try living on one income for a while to see how hard it would be for 1 person to stay home.
You could also start doing some research to see exactly how much extra help would be. I think the person behind me at work as someone -- they pay her $500 or so a week. So unless you make more than that it might make more sense for you to stay at home for the short term.
You could also consider working part time, at nights or weekends when your husband could watch your child.

How about all of the above?!?!?! No really, I will most likely take some time off, work part time , use day care AND use my only two friends ( and they happened to be my best friends in the wholw wide world) to help out as well. IT is hard, because none of our family is here in Florida and both of us need to work for health benefit reasons, money, etc.

I'll take a short time off, and my baby is coming with me since I work in a privately owned store. I might cut back on my 35 hrs a week and my grandma might move down to GA from NY, so she'd be around to help

Re: baby ? (poll)
I only work part time right now, so I will continue doing that and have help from both of our mothers. I'm a dance teacher and I work 3 afternoons, and then one full day (well, from 1:30-8:30) So I will have our moms watch the baby for three afternoons, DH will work from home on my long day and other than that I'll be at home. Right now I also work a couple of hours in the morning teaching creative movement to toddlers, but I will quit that when I have a baby.

Michele, are you hinting at something? I am hoping to not to have to go back to work or worse comes to worse I can put the baby in the daycare I work at and only work part time

We are probably going to wait two years. I don't have tenture yet! Although I would like to be a 'young' mom...My job is important to me. Also my husband has his health insurance through me. So it looks as though I might have to go back to work after 3 months. Stinks. But who knows what can happen in two years!!!

I have my mom and m-i-l to help out. However, I would really like to stay home for a couple of years with our baby. I don't want to miss all their 'firsts'...ya know what I mean. I don't want to come home and hear about it...I want to be there experiencing it and be the one to tell other people.

thank you for all the responses and great advice! i guess i'm not the only one struggling with this.
Michele, are you hinting at something?
no steph... just talking and planning now. imagine me rolling down the aisle at mel's wedding!
i just feel like we don't have much time to wait b/c of my age and that we want at LEAST 2 children. we've been together for 8 years and we are ready emotionally (as much as a couple can be) but financially and logistically we can't figure it out. it's sooo frustrating!

We are the same way, defenitly ready emotional, but we live in my parents basement. We've realized though that we will never be financially ready for it, so if we wait we will be old and gray so we just need to go with the flow and if it happens, it happens
