Bank account issues
After DH and I got married, we opened joint accounts at a new bank. I also opened one in my maiden name because that's what I use professionally and, even after I change my paychecks over, I may still get fees paid to me in that name. They didn't state that there was a problem when we opened the account, probably over a month ago.I got a letter today saying that due to regulations, I cannot have two names associated with the same social security number. Under NY law, I can use either or both of my names. I still have bank accounts under my maiden name at other banks. Has anyone had a similar problem? What did you do?

Re: Bank account issues
I had that problem, but yet still have another account (shh don't tell DH) in my maiden name at a different bank. The other bank never said a word but the bank that had the joint gave me a problem with keeping my checking in my maiden name.

Re: Bank account issues
I believe the IRS is cross checking names & SS#s now and people are being issued fines for not having their information in order. (we got a notice from the IRS about it at work).I still haven't changed my name with SS so my old account has my maiden name. I have my married name on a joint account with DH but his social security number is the one that is issued the 1099.

Re: Bank account issues
Can't you just add your married name after your maiden name on the account so a check in any name will work?

I believe this is true. Recently I was at SS to change my name and during my 2 hour wait
I started chatting with some of the other people on line. A few were women in there 40's that have been married for 20 or so years who were sent letters and fines. They had never changed there name, addresses etc and had to do it within a certain time frame. They were saying how they couldn't believe this caught up with them.Good Luck!

Re: Bank account issues
I have my pre-marriage bank account still in my maiden name, AND my post marriage joint account in my married name. So far no problems, but it's only been a couple of months. Also, they are at different banks (not sure this makes any difference). I can't fully change my name yet for professional reasons so I wanted it this way in case I receive checks made out to either name. It will really piss me off if it becomes a problem!

Re: Bank account issues
I think the only issue is if it's at the SAME bank.Jim (financial advisor guy) say he can see an issue with matching SS in one bank but you should have no problems with different banks.
I've also asked if any of his clients have had this issue, he says so far none have. Older women with married/maiden names (lots of money) in several accounts, trusts, etc.

they need to give you a little chance. I mean you only got married 2.5 months ago!!!!!!!I still have to fill out the forms for my professional license to change so I can change my name at work!

Re: Bank account issues
isn't it easy to just call the bank up and have them switch the account to your married name? wouldn't that alleviate the problem?

No, because I need an account in my maiden name for professional stuff. I wanted them all in one bank, but I guess I'll just have to leave the existing ones at my other bank.
Thanks for the responses.

Re: Bank account issues
My bank (Washington Mutual) told me that when I changed my name, any checks I got in my maiden name I could still cash there (since that name was originally on the account). I just have to endorse them First Name Maiden Name-Married Name and they take it.HTH.
