DH and I were just invited to a wedding that starts in mid-afternoon on a Sunday but says 'black tie'
Before I got the invite I was planning to wear something in the little black dress family to this affair. But the black tie threw me. Since it's still a Sunday afternoon, is it acceptable to wear a short black dress?
Clearly I don't have to decide this TODAY but this is the first wedding I've been invited to in years that I wasn't a part of!

I think so. Over the summer, I went to a thursday night, NYC wedding at the Rainbow Room. It was black tie. The majority of the women had on cocktail length dresses, not gowns. While the guys wore tuxes. I think as long as it's a dressy dress, and not a sun dress, you're fine.

YES! Black tie doesn't mean ball gowns unless its soemthing like a UN function. You can wear a shorter tasteful dress like a cocktail dress. I'd stay away from patterns or anything like that; like chiffon florals etc. No sundresses. Those dont look as 'black tie' but a little black dress should be fine.
I have a basic black sheath dress in this pretty silk shantung fabric (hah actually a BM dress lmao) that I wear to EVERY more formal event. It was expensive when i got it, but considering how often Ive worn it, one of my best buys. I always get complimented on it.

Thanks ladies. First time I ever heard of black tie in the middle of the day! But hey, I like getting all fancypants-ed up so I'm happy!
Dude, I wish I had a black BM dress. We won't discuss the colors I have in my closet but the words Easter and Egg come to mind

I had the same issue for a very traditional Jewish black tie wedding also in the afternoon. I wore a cocktail length black dress. There were a lot of guests who wore long dresses. But plenty of guests wore shorter dresses. You cna always snazz it up with some jewelry and an updo.
ETA: This is the dress I wore.. I LOVE IT!! It's BCBG Max Azria at Nordstrom. I got a sick deal on it from BCBG directly, but that was a few months ago. It's on sale at Nordstrom right now.

Well I actually wasnt in the bridal party LOL. But it was a friend of the family getting married and she had the girls look at dresses by this designer. Since one of her girls who was about my height and weight wasn't there that day, she made me try it because she wanted to make sure it was universally flattering. I hadn't found a dress but loved the sheen to the fabric and the way it fit me so I ordered one in black.
It was expensive, but I got a discount because she had so many girls and Ive worn it to sooo many functions. I am a sucker for pretty fabrics because my mom used to sew. So Im anal about seams and all of that.

I thought black tie was a night thing. The black short dress sounds good. Black is always the best you can dress it up or down. Is your Dh wearing a tux? Does black tier mean the men all have to wear a tux or can he wear a dark suit? I am clueless. I don't really have a reason to ask just in case this ever comes up when i am on Jeopardy!

In addition to my post above, something like this dress would work too. BCBGMAXAZRIA Strapless Satin Party Dress
Thats a PRETTY dress. I agree-I think if you put emphasis on your accesories you will be fine. Ive worn shorter cocktail dresses to evening wddings before. NEVER wear ballgowns even to black tie because when will i wear it again? As long as you're elegant you can get away with it.

Re: Believe it or not I have a WR question
those types of invites are ridiculous, IMO. Black tie insinuates a night wedding....
but, i think you'd be fine with a simple black dress.... DH should technically be in a tux... most will probably wear dark suits.

Re: Believe it or not I have a WR question
I think being that it's a Sunday afternoon wedding, a black cocktail dress is perfectly acceptable for a black tie affair
