Breaking out - not in acne

Original post by TrueLoveIn2008

This is starting to get to me and I had to vent about it.

I have psoriasis. It's gone through it's stages - and before the wedding, my scalp was getting pretty bad. (It started out, years ago, on my 'trunk' - between my neck and butt - but had pretty much disappeared from that area and moved to the head almost exclusively - which is good because no one sees it, but bad because it's itchy and bumpy, and flaky sometimes.) I had gone on a biologic medicine - the type that have to be injected (you may have seen the commercials for embrel or humira on TV, these are two brands of biologics) - in Dec 2007 - March 2008, and it helped a bit, but by August / September 2008 it was getting bad again. So my doc got some free samples from the Humira drug rep and gave me 4 shots in October. I was CLEAR for my wedding and it was wonderful!

In November we went to Alaska for the HM, and the water there is very rich in minerals, including sulfur, which is GREAT for psoriasis. (Most of the medicated shampoos I use have sulfur in them.) Because of this, I was clear for all of November, too.

I went to the doc in early Dec and it was starting to come back. We discussed me going on Humira, the drug he gave me four shots of in October, but it's a process to get approved.

Since then, I have lost my job and thus my insurance -- and have broken out TERRIBLY. My back looks like I have the chicken pox, and my head is very itchy and flaky. I'm trying a lot of things and I think it might be getting a little better, but it looks so bad

Stress makes it worse, too. I wonder how bad it will get in the next few weeks, if the job hunting is not very promising?? DH makes comments about it - I know deep down he doesn't care (he has psoriasis too but not as bad - our kids are going to be covered, this will be fun) but it's still hard

If you have read this far -- thanks I needed to say how it's bothering me.

I have psoriasis also. Before my wedding my Dr suggested going for phototheopy. Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover it. What my Dr suggested for 'short term' relief (because it is not 100% healthy and a DR would never suggest such a thing, but I was desperate) .....TANNING.
I got a 1 month unlimited pass to a tanning salon. I went in the stand up for 6 minutes at a time. I wasn't looking to tan, I was looking for the UV lights and heat. IT WORKED GREAT!!!
The UV lights are similar to that which they use in phototheopy.

Please use protection on the parts on you body that is not covered in psoriasis.

I have it also, but not as severe. Do any ointments or liquids work? I've been using a liquid on my scalp for years when I get a break out and it gets rid of it. The stuff might help a little for you.

Some work, some don't. What have you been using? Do you know the prescription name? I've tried so many it's hard to keep track!

I don't remember off the top of my head. I'll check when I'm home. It's a clear liquid.

Hugs
Try not to stress, as you said, it will only make the psoraisis worse.
Would washing your body with a sulfur shampoo help with the itching and peeling ?
If not, then the only thing you can do is go back to Alaska. (trying to make you laugh here - I've been there too and the scenery is gorgeous).

Thanks DH would loooooove it if I said, well, we just have to go back to Alaska. He comments EVERY DAY about how he wants to move there. Uh, no thanks. I liked it there - but it's too far and way too cold most of the year. But the water was soooo good for me.

I did this a few years ago .. and it helped a bit .. and then I tried it in October before the wedding, and I don't know if it helped too much then because I was also on the biologic meds (shots) -- I think those helped more. I could do it again ... but I'm not sure I want to ... but I will keep it in mind, thanks.

Thanks. I use clobex spray ... and I have used olux foam (both are cortisones). Thanks for checking for me.

Re: Breaking out - not in acne

Jenn, My Derm had me get this over the counter stuff at the pharmacy called P&S. There was a shampoo and serum to help loosen the 'flakes' which worked well for me. Also try to deep condition weekly. Aussie's 5 minute miracle is great.....For your body, I've used oatmeal soap or baby oil. I know you aren't crazy about tanning, but I heard that does wonders. The gym is going to help you release stress...hang in girl!

Thanks - I have some of that P&S stuff ... I've tried so much stuff that I forget about some things, you know? I will try that again. It's all just so ANNOYING. I hate being covered in crap, I can't reach a lot of areas, and I forget a lot, esp at night, even though it's bothering me - you just want to go to bed when it's 11:00 you know? You forget about putting lotions and creams on.

I will buy some oatmeal soap though, that should help the back - maybe oatmeal body wash.

Thanks
