Re: Brooklyn
Check out Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Sheepshead Bay, and Marine Park. Bergen Beach is also nice. I LOVE Park Slope too.
Areas I would personally not buy in: East Ny, Bushwick, Brownsvile, Bed Stuy, Flatbush, Canarsie, Old Mil Basin, Sunset Park, Borough Park.
If u have any questions feel free to FM. I am a Bklyn girl.

Re: Brooklyn
Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge are both nice. DH grew up in Bensonhurst and his brother and SIL live in Bay Ridge now. Dyker Heights is beautiful too but a lot more expensive. Bergen Beach is also really nice, my aunt has a beautiful house there right across the street from the park.

Re: Brooklyn
Parts of Bayridge & Definitely Dyker Heights. Park Slope is nice & Williamsburg has really built up nicely over the past years.
Have a few friends in Park Slope & love it.
I have many friends in Bayridge & Dyker Heights & actually did three yrs many yrs ago in Dyker. Loved it.
Williamsburg friends live there & they love it.

Re: Brooklyn
FH and I live in DUMBO and I love it!!! It's an awesome neighborhood that's extremely family friendly and is filled with adorable shops, restaurants and art galleries. I also recommend Brooklyn Heights.

I live in Gowanus and would not buy here. It's next to a bunch of good neighborhoods, without actually being a good neighborhood itself. Much of it is warehouses, and some of the side roads are bad places to be at night. The canal just became a Superfund site, which means the feds will be cleaning it up for years to come. Maybe decades.
Carroll Gardens is beautiful, but the apartments will probably be close in price to Brooklyn Heights. (Meaning: $$$$) You might have to go pretty far south in Park Slope to find something under 500k. Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill should be slightly more affordable. Comparatively, Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights are good deals and nice areas, though not necessarily as young as the 'hoods I just mentioned.
I would also consider:
FORT GREENE: great, young neighborhood and decent housing, very close to public transportation, fairly affordable
PROSPECT HEIGHTS: beautiful housing and decent neighborhood, right by the park, good public transportation, fairly affordable
This might help, too: http://nymag.com/realestate/neighborhoods/2010/65374
P.S. Good call on Williamsburg. It's way, way overdeveloped and the L Train is the worst. Decent pizza, though.
