Cablevision vs. Fios?

Cablevision vs. Fios?

Well, seeing as how Michelle so generously made me NOTW, I figured I'd kick it off w/ a question about this since we just got this letter in the mail yesterday and I am not thrilled, to say the least

DH and I have had the Optimum Triple Play for quite awhile now. I honestly never knew that it was only a 'promotion' and it was gonna expire! We just got the letter yesterday that as of April 9, we have to pay these obscene prices!!! We really can't afford it! As it was, our cable bill for all 3 services was about $160/month. Once the promo expires next month, we're talking about $200/ month at LEAST!

Does anyone know if Verizon is any cheaper? Is the service better? I am currently on hold w/ Cablevision waiting to see if they can do anything for us, but I am doubting it...

Any help would definitely be appreciated, ladies! Thanks in advance!

Re: Cablevision vs. Fios?

We have Verizon tv and phone but Optimum internet.

Fios tv is cheaper. It takes awhile to get used to their channel line-up though. Also, u don't get the Weather Channel, Channel 12, or Metro Traffic and Weather. Sounds silly, but that's annoying. The picture quality is great.

We got rid of Verizon internet though bc we couldn't get it to work with his video games. Verizon wanted us to pay $25 a month for premium tech support in order to use his Playstation. Ridiculous.

The Verizon phone line is fine. No problems.

Oohh....1 more thing.....For FIOS tv, they'll come attach this big, ugly, grey box to your house.

I guess it can't hurt to check Fios prices in your area.

I have heard good and bad about FIOS quality. Before we got married I had Verizon for my phone service and rarely had a problem. We have Cablevision for all three now...but I'm a little bit biased bec DH works there I know that i used to call cable and tell them I was moving and they would give me a discount to keep them as my service provider. Also if you mention you are going to Verizon, they will probably give you some sort of discount to keep your business!!! I used to do all those things when my promotion expired to keep costs down lol.

we have the optimum triple play, but no added channels like HBO or showtime. It started at $99 for a year and now its about $130. Thats one way we've been saving money by not having any premium channels.

We got FIOS a few months ago and its so much better. I never get thrown off the internet and the picture on my TV is soo much better. It is also so much cheaper a month.

Plus I love the multi-room DVR- I can tape something in the living room and watch it in the bedroom. With optimum, we didnt have that.

I got used to no NEWS 12 and the different channel line up. They have a weather channel too.

I recommend it

I have cablevision. No problems! Great support staff also. Verizon has some hidden fees.

Verizon has some hidden fees. From what I understand, you can tell Cablevision you want the rate extended or you're leaving and they will honor it. I plan on doing this in July!

We also have Verizon. We like it better. It took a while for us to get use to the channel line up but now that we have its great. You get more channels for cheaper than io. I also think the internet runs faster with the fios. The only problem we had was when it was first installed the phone was echoing a lot but they came and fixed that. Since than everything has been good.

This is what we have. We pay around $130 per month for the triple play with no added channels. DH and I don't watch a lot of TV so standard cable is good enough for us.

For those of you with Fios, would you mind my asking what you pay per month? You can give me an approximation if you don't feel comfy, and you can also FM me if you'd rather Thank you all so much!

Re: Cablevision vs. Fios?

we were having this debate until we found out we couldn't get Fios on our block, so we have cablevision. when we were living at my ILs house, we had Fios. i had really liked it (i usesd to HATE cablevision), but DH liked cablevision more. the customer service w/ cablevision is better, and for DH, the sports channels he watches are available in HD on cablevision but not on Fios. the non-HD channels on Fios look better though than the non-HD channels on cablevision.

our biggest complaint w/ Fios was the multi-room DVR. it's great when it works, but when it doesn't it suxx. we would have to record things from upstairs, but were able to watch them in our bedroom. but sometimes, for no reason, you would get a message that the signal or something was lost, and it stopped playing what you were watching. if you only had 10 min left to a show, you had to fast forward all the way to where you left off - it had no memory of where it kicked you out. this happened quite a bit, so we would sometimes just stop the show in the middle incase it kicked us out. if you stop it, it'll remember where you stopped it from.

overall, i no longer hate cablevision, i think it's improved since we last had it.
