Camp

Original post by JennRenee

I never went to camp as a kid, and neither did anyone in my neighborhood. Summers were for our pools, going to the beach, and just general PLAYING all day.

When I first started teaching, I realized that every kid at my school went to camp, and about half went to sleepaway camp. I though that was ridiculous, and decided I'd NEVER send MY child to camp. I wanted my children to enjoy summer as I did.
Then I realized, if everyone else goes to camp, who will my child play with?! I grudgingly realized that camp was probably inevitable.

Now that I'm older, and in the mode to actually have a child, I'm thinking camp is a great idea, and hoping I'll have the money to send my child to a really great day camp, or even sleepaway or travel camp. It's funny how your mind set changes...

My question is (and I do have one ) did you go to camp? Do/will you send your children?

Re: Camp

This is not something I have thought about in soooo long but as a kid I always begged to go to camp but unfortunately the finances were not there--but now thinking ahead to when we have kids I would love to be able to send them to sleep away camp-- it seems like so many of you had great experiences

Re: Camp

Camp--I must say was such an incredible experience for me. I went to sleep away camp from the age of 8-16. My parents are teachers so my brother and I would get to go to sleepaway camp where they worked.

Although they were at the same place I never saw them since I was having the time of my life. I would spend the summers in the Berkshires. It was awesome.

the funny thing with me is that I was the only one of my friends growing up who was never home for the summer. I remember always getting teased but it was well worth it.

I found the website to my camp I went to and they have an alumni section where I have caught up with many of my camp friends. They were such a big part of my life. It was so nice to hear from again. There are even having an alumni day this year and maybe we will be able to go.

I hope to be able to send my children to sleepaway camp. They have so much to learn about being themselves and also being on their own. I hope they will be able to look back at those years the same way I am doing now!!!!

Re: Camp

I never went to a real camp. We were poor, although we didn't know it back then. We spent almost every day at the beach...thats one of the best things about growing up on LI. Ok, it IS the best thing!
Actually, when I was in high school I went to band camp. For real I did! How funny is that?

Re: Camp

No camp for me! Just stayed outside running around like a lunatic playing ringalario (sp?), red light green light, catching fireflies, playing with the spaldeens (remember those?) and getting into the typical fights us kids usually got into. Then of course there were the many ER visits because I sprained my ankle a million times when I insisted on going down the stairs (I lived on the 3rd floor) with my skates still on so that I could get money for Mr. Softee or Good Humor!!!!

Many a summer was spent out in East Setauket and Stony Brook at my cousin's house!! Boy the fun we had out there!!!!
