Can someone help me find a seamstress?

Hi Ladies.
I am not getting married untill May, (a little less than 9months to go), but when the time comes to go for fittings, I am going to need a seamstress. I refuse to go to the place where I bought my gown (David's Bridal).

Has any of you ladies used a seamstress other than where you purchased your gown?

Please try and post someone who you have used for your gown if this is at all possible.

I live in Queens but I will drive to Nassau or even western suffolk if i have to.

My dress doesn't need much work, just a little on the top, the bustle and the length, but I want someone who is excellent of course

Thanks Ladies. This post will become my printed out bible.

I also purchased my dress at David's and will not go there for alterations, so I need a good seamstress too

I too got my dress from David's Bridal and have heard the same horror stories. I had asked on the boards a while back and received a recomendation for a seamstress who workd at a bridal salon, and also works on the side out of her house. I met with her with my dress this past Sunday, and she seems wonderful. She knows what she is talking about and like she will be very easy to work with. And since she came recomended on these boards, I figure I can't go wrong. Her name is Marina, and her # is 631-580-5993. She is located in Ronkonkoma. Good Luck !!

Karin Y (can't remember her long last name - she has a website!) Do a search under my name. I used her last year and she was FANTASTIC!!! VERY reasonable. She works out of her home in Astoria.

She also made one of the girls' gowns here.

Good luck!

I am going to see Karin Y today. Here is her info:
Karin Yngvesdotter is at
24-31 41st Street (Take N to Astoria Blvd)
Astoria, Queens
phone: 718-278-9295
email: [email protected]
website: www.yngvesdotter.com

I am bringing Davids Bridal catalog with 4 dresses that I liked and will ask her which will look the best once it's been altered (either cut or somehow flat bustle train, hem - I am 5' tall, and a little at the shoulders). I'll ask about pricing and will post results here, ok.

Jenn, there's a place in Astoria that does alterations -- I didn't have my dress done there, but I have brought other dresses in there for her to do. I'll ask my mother for the info and get back to you. I know it's on 38th St. and 31st Ave off Steinway St.

I met with karin yesterday. She was very calming with regard to my dress. What we'll be doing with it is hemming it from the waist, and cutting the train off, and then making the train detachable... And its David's bridal style 5868, which has a lot of lace applique. Karin will be moving a whole bunch of appliques around, b/c there is no other way to hem the dress without ruining it. The damage would be around $300 or so. I have also seen her photo album for the dresses that she made herself, and I have to say that they all look very pretty and creative, very different from what I have seen at David's on my visit.
