John & I plan to move to LI in the near future. What is a good bank for us to open a joint checking/savings in? One that has online payment available?
Thanks

I can't recommend Chase - lots of fees. Once we move into our new house we're switching to probably Washington Mutual (they're all over LI now) or Commerce Bank.

You can only join Bethpage Federal Credit Union if your company, or someone in your family, is a member. That's how I got in because my father's company uses them as their bank, and they do a family program.
They really are a great bank though.

What about Citibank...we use them and like them. I think there are enough on LI... The only drawback is that you need to keep a minimum balance in the savings account...but its not too much.

Re: Can someone recommend me a good bank?
I think it really depends on what you are looking in the bank. Citibank and Chase typcially have very high min. balance requirements or higher fees if you don't met those requirements. Credit Unions- normally you have to work at a certain places or have a family member a part of the bank in order to join. But if you can, they typically have lower fees and requirements and offer better interest rates and loan rates too. they do have limited locations. Fleet- Scott had a Fleet account before we got married and just combined accounts (I have a credit union). We liked Fleet and never had any issues at all. Not sure what the requirements are, but there are a lot of branches and services offered.

I use to be with Chase and had nothing but problems. I know many of you use them but they are not for us, we had nightmares. Ever since I left them I have been with Fleet and only had great experiences.

I use Brooklyn Federal savings, they do not have many branches but have been wonderful to me and I also use Greenpoint and they have been great also.

Re: Can someone recommend me a good bank?
FYI about credit unions-many of them have partnerships by which you can actually go to other credit unions and bank at your own. For example, if you use Island Federal Credit Union and have a Bethpage or Teachers Credit Union near you, you can bank there.
We almost wrote off using Island Federal because there’s only 3 or 4 locations and none near us but there’s a Teacher’s around the corner and we’re about to switch everything over.

I like Fleet for their checking account where you don't have to keep a balance.

I love my Fleet ... but I know someone on the board had a really bad experience with them. You do need to have min. balances or else there is a fee, but there are a TON of Fleet ATMs which are important to Rob and I, especially ones at the train stations - Fleet is affiliated with the LIRR, so there is an ATM at each of our stations. But also, the Fleet branch by me, is open late one night, open Sat. until 2 and even opened on Sunday - that's convenient for us.
