I was wondering if you could go to any Social Security office to change your SS card? I commute through Hoboken in the morning but live in NY State and there's a SS office in Hoboken.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking! I think it would be easier to go to the Hoboken one instead of going to the one in lower Manhattan (and it would be less out of my way as well!)

No I do not believe you can, I live in Queens and almost went to the one in Mineola and found out at the last minute that you have to go to a specific one in the county you reside in. I would look on the ss website

I found the answer on their website (took awhile). Unfortunately, I was going to go on Tuesday but, they are closed for a National Day of Mourning.
Question - Can I go to the nearest Social Security office, or must I go to one which services my ZIP code?
Answer - Usually the Social Security office that services your ZIP Code will also be your nearest office, but you may visit any Social Security office for services. 800 number agents have information on all offices for each city, not just the servicing office.

Ali- I actually called them today since I'm going to try to go this afternoon. As a jersey resident they told me that I could go anywhere...and I plan to go to the midtown manhattan office. The exception to that is Brooklyn, Queens, and Nevada (??) residents...they have to go to specific offices. At least that's what the semi-cheerful SS person I spoke to said (after getting really irritated by their automated phone system I just kept saying 'Representative Representative' ).

I ended up going to my local office anyway since I decided I'd do it today since I got out of work at 12 and home by 2pm. I was in and out of there in 20 minutes!
Tomorrow is the bank and Tuesday is DMV and work documents. I think I realize why women have to do all of this, men would just say forget it!
