I went to DMV first than SS. I don't think it
really matters.

I did both within a few days (DMV, SS) and both only with my marriage license. You do need the original for both though - and for your passport. Most everything else I have found copies work fine.

As for whatever name you choose, I am almost positive that you had to have done that when you filled out the application for the license. The license itself will include your new name (if applicable). You can only change it to that name. Anything else would need a court order.

Re: Changing last name

I was doing something funky with my name - dropping my middle name and making my maiden name my new middle name. You can't do this on the marriage certificate, so I figured the best bet was to go to the SS office first - since I had to change my name with SS in order to change it with my payroll department and it seemed the best way to legally change my name. Then I went to DMV and that was really easy.

That's what I did too, and also went to SS office first.

I still have not made it to SS, but I did go to DMV the other day. They just wanted the marriage certificate and my license.
