Changing my name!

I'm finally doing it!

Any suggestions? Where do I go... what do I need...does it take long.... what can I do over the phone??? Any help is SO appreciated

Take your original marriage certificate that you got in the mail after your wedding to the DMV. You fill out a form, MUST take a new picture (required when changing your name), pay a fee and viola!

You take your original marriage certificate to Social Security and do the same.

You can call your credit cards to change your name over the phone.

Go to SS first because DMV sometimes asks for the new card. SS will issue you a letter stating that the name change is in progress.

Make sure you know which SS office to go to.
Not all of them issue cards.

Download all of the forms before you go. Saves you some time at the offices.

That's crazy - I know some people that have only changed their name with the DMV and they don't ask for the new SS card - doesn't even say it's a requirement when you look up the info on DMV.

Susi's right about looking into which SS office to go to - if you're a NYC resident, they have restrictions too - like Queens residents can ONLY go to the Jamaica SS office to get a new one. Brooklyn residents can only go to one specific office in Brooklyn. If you're on LI, look to make sure you can get a new card issued before you head out.
