Changing your name?

Changing your name?

Hey married ladies!!!

I have not gone to switch my name yet.

I was wondering if you go to switch your name at the DMV do you have to have done your SS card before you go?

It's time for my new license and I figured now was a good time to switch my name.

Also, a silly silly question, but if I hyphenate my name (ie: Smith-Jones) When I sign papers do I have to sign both names or can I just write my new Last name? I want to hyphenate my name to keep it going however I don't want to have to sign both names all the time.

Thanks girls!!!
Look forward to hearing from you all soon. =)

You can go in either order to get your name changed and you can go on the same day :) If you hyphenate your name, I think you have to legally make that your name....and you would have to sign all your legal papers with your hyphenated name. I tried to do that and it was a complicated process, so I actually dropped the idea! Maybe another NW here has gone through the process and can give you more info...

if you hyphenated your name on your marriage license that's what it will change to on your license and ss card. otherwise, i'm pretty sure you have to go to court to change your name. GL!

Re: Changing your name?

Aaahhhhh Good point about the marriage license!! I kinda thought that is what I have to change it to!!!

Well in that case I guess it's his name all the way!!! LOL

Plus I thought it would get complicated as well for the future!! I just thought maybe medical records would be easier to keep track of if I kept my name.

Now it's getting used to signing his name to everything that I have to get used to!

Thanks Girls!!!

Re: Changing your name?

if you are going to choose one to do first I would do SS. then do DMV . if you are going the same day of with in days, it doesnt matter which you do first. But i would suggest SS first since that is the most important if you are going to change your name at work, payroll - you need to have your SS changed.

at DMV dont forget to change name on registration as well. for some reason they didnt mention this to me so i still have not done it..
