I only have one copy of my marriage licence at the moment. Does SS keep the copy or do they just need to see it? Do I need to get another copy before I go to change my name? TIA!

Re: Changing your name at SS
I am going to try to go Melville today at lunch, it is less than a mile from my office! :)
I believe you need the original certificate and your license. They will not keep it.

They just look at the marriage certificate. Don't forget to bring your original SS card. They take that and keep it, you get a receipt stating that a new card is in the works. I got my new SS card in just one week. Still waiting for my driver's license. Didn't change my registration - they need too much info, and I'll just do it next year when my lease is up.

Yes, they just look at the certificate. I went on Friday to do it.

they just look at the marriage certificate, noting that you are married. they do ask if you have the ss on you. if you do they destroy for you if not they let you know that the old is is invalid and that you should destroy it.

They just look at your marriage certificate and original SS card. They didn't take my SS card - and I've never heard of them keeping your original SS card. I was told to shred the old one when my new card arrived.
I needed my old SS card to get my DL. (You must present a SS card to the DMV now, regardless of your other proof of identity. It doesn't matter if it has your maiden or married name on it.)

DMV never asked to see the SS card. In any case, the receipt from SS is proof that your name is being changed and a new card is being issued. I went to both SS and DMV in Jamaica because I am a Queens resident.
I guess same as applying for the marriage license, each office is different.

When I went to the DMV in September, there were signs all over that a valid SS card must be presented for all transactions now. I went to the DMV in midtown Manhattan during the work day. I guess some offices are stricter than others about enforcing it.
The SS office I went to looked at my SS card, but didn't take it. They told me to keep it and shred it when my new card arrived. I had my new card in about a week.

UGH, so I did it, I was only there for an hour and 20 mins. They called like 7 people on the 'B' line for every 'A' ticket!
She said you SHOULD have your new card to get your new license. I guess I will just wait for it and then go, besides, I have waited around enough this week.

You don't need your new SS card to get your license. I did mine all in one day - went to SS and then took my old card to the DMV.
