Chores

Chores

Does anyone else have to remind their husband to do his assigned chores? My husband's only chore is to take out the garbage twice a week and if I don't remind him, it doesn't get done. Am I alone here?

you're not alone...but I have come to accept it...I write down a list for DH...I used to laugh that my mom did this for my dad...but it works!! and DH likes it...he LOVES lists...and likes to cross the items off!!

Re: Chores

My hubby has his list in his computer. He prints it out once a week and hangs it on the fridge. As he does each chore he can 'X' it off his list. He gets all excited when his whole list is done. He has been doing this since before we were together (7 years) and even though I tease him about being anal retentive he does it every single week. It just cracks me up .

Re: Chores

You are not alone! We share a lot of the cleaning duties and this is nothing new to him YET every week when we go to clean he has to ask 'what do I need to do??' He never takes initiative but I guess it will have to be something I live with!!

In my house I am the list person and my husband calls me anal for this. I feel like I have to tell him 20 times to do something, before he actually hears me!

My husband is very neat. He usually has to remind me to help with stuff.

Re: Chores

My husband is pretty good at this. We pretty much have all the cleaning divided up and I do the cooking so he deals with anything relating to the dog. But the best way to remind him is when he sees me cleaning while he is sitting on the coach. That gets him moving!

Re: Chores

Chores I'd have to first define the meaning of the word to my DH! He does not help around the house at all! Unless I ask.
Maybe he just doesn't care about keeping things tidy like I do.

Re: Chores

Mary, Im laughing because the only times my husband 'forgot' to take out the garbage were the days that I DIDNT remind him !!

Wendy, count your blessings baby ! Id pay for Husband Training Boot Camp to have John print out a list and follow through with it !

I find it really hard to keep up with things in the house, especially since I do most of it !
Im done cleaning one room, and by then the next room is ready to be cleaned up again. Ive tried the list thing and John is just like 'whats this about ???' He gets annoyed and takes it like me telling him what to do, lol. (I AM ! )
Once in a while he will be 1,000% and we'll both be on a cleaning/organzing spree. But most of the time, laundry, dishwasher, cooking etc etc. ME ME ME. (he likes to cook, so cant complain there, but he makes enough of a mess - that he doesnt clean up - that I just would rather cook myself - I cook neatly )

I feel like I can never get to major projects in the house because my spare time is spent cleaning, organzing, and doing it over and over again in cycles....and wait till my son is a toddler !!

That housekeeper idea is lookin better and better!

It really takes both people for the house to be kept clean. Ive known several couples, young and even one very elderly couple. Both husband and wife were very neat, tidy organized and helpful in every aspect...

Dont get me started on this...

Oh, and in the summer, his 'job' is the pool. Whoopee !

Re: Chores

I'm in the same boat as Anna - I can't seem to keep up with the chores and he always finds an excuse why he can't help me.

I find that I'm glad when people are coming over because it forces me to clean and get things straightened out in the house.

I find that if I don't do it, it doesn't get done.

Last night I asked him to take out the garbage and he said 'take it where?'

I really wanted to tell him where he should put it, thought better of it and just laughed at him!!!

Re: Chores

Scott vacumns every week, no fail. I don't even have to ask. He also is in charge of filling in the kitty litter and taking out the garbage to the curb. After that I need to 'ask' him to do anything else. It isn't that he won't do it. He honestly doesn't think a bathroom needs to get cleaned more than once a month or that cups don't need to live on our coffee table.

Re: Chores

We are opposite - DH is the one that insists the entire LR needs to be dusted 2x's a week and vacuums something like 3 days a week. I would rather have no decorations or knick knacks then dust:)

I do clean the bathroom every week and we inadvertently trade off cooking and doing dishes. I usually wipe down everything in the kitchen after I do the dishes so that gets done once or twice a week.

Laundry, is usually the DH.

I'm sooooooo lucky with this

Re: Chores

When we lived inan apartment, I never had to remind my FH to do any chores, but since we moved in with my parents I have to remind him to do everything, we used to do our own laundry, I would bring mine to my mom's and do it there and he would do his at his mom's, now I do all of it, all the time!!! I am getting sick of doing everything!!! Ugh - just had to vent!

Re: Chores

Patrick is VERY on top of 'his' things in the house. We didn't divide the chores up, they divided themselves, based on what we don't mind doing. There are some things that are 'whoever gets to it first', but the bathroom and kitchen are ALWAYS mine, and vacuuming and the garbage is ALWAYS his.
He asked me to take the garbage out once and I said 'For dinner and a movie or just for coffee?' He burst out laughing, and I got my point across that I DON'T do garbage.

Re: Chores

Joe mops the floors (kitchen, dining room & living room) since he says I don't know what I'm doing! The nerve! Knock yourself out buddy!!! But in his defense, since I found out I was preggo and home sick, he's been helping me do a lot because he doesn't want me bending and over-exerting myself (isn't he the bestest?).

I do have to remind him to take out the garbage and recycle. He will help me with dinner, but hates the clean up afterwards!!

The bathroom and the bedroom are always mine -- he will dust the entertainment center because it contains his 'toys' and I'm not allowed to touch!

I'm just thankful he's as helpful as he is because some of my friend's husbands don't do anything at all!!!

Re: Chores

Anna and the rest of you ladies I will be glad to lend out Gene for a week or two of husband training. I have to be honest and say that I am very very lucky. Gene lived by himself for a long time and in order to get things done he started 'The List'. He says it helps him get things done although for the last 2 months while our house has been ripped apart he has lived without it and still gotten it all done.

I am truly grateful that he doesn't mind doing so much. For the last 2 months while I have been sick, he has had to do everything and I mean everything in the house. Add to that the fact that we had already commited to having our kitchen and master bathroom remodeled before I got sick and they ripped up both rooms 2 days before I came home from the hospital and you can only imagine the chaos. We have really tested out the 'in sickness' part of our vows.

I know that I am well and truly blessed to have my wonderful, loving and caring husband. All that and housework too!

Re: Chores

Same here. I have to constantly nag and nag like being his mother to do daily household chores and/or household maintence like changing a broken light blub, etc. He's like a big baby as he loves to procrtastinate with household chores!

Sometimes I e-mail him a task list of all the chores I want him to do while at work.

Re: Chores

Girl, girl, girl, where do I begin. This man is going to make me pull my hair out. I think he has selective memory when it comes to doing his chores. Sometimes it seem as if he could care less. I leave it until he gets good and ready to do it. It drives me crazy but if I did his chores I would be the only one doing anything and I refuse to do that.

Re: Chores

all the time....I don't think they will ever change. His chore is simply to put his clothes away after work, put dirty clothes in the hamper and keep all his papers & junk in the office. I guess this is too much to ask!

We need to send some of these men to training classes.
